Default Is the new slim PS3 worth it?

I own the original "fat" PS3 and thinking about selling it to my friend and buying the new "slim" PS3. My question is... Is it worth for those who now have it compared to the old one? My only gripes looks-wise is that it doesn't have the glossy finish anymore, and push buttons instead of the touch.

The only thing I can recommend is if you have a 1st gen PS3 then the Slim is worth it for the noise factor. My 1st Gen PS3 sounds like a jet engine when the fan kicks on. Otherwise, I think the question you need to ask yourself is why do you really need it? Is there a feature (like bitstreaming the HD codecs) that you might be after?

I have heard that it's sooooo quiet, which is a plus in my mind. Just wanting to know if people thought it was worth the upgrade. It's still bluetooth compatiable right?

Yes bluetooth works with it and it is quiet. Also dont look at the lack of a glossy finish as a downside. think, no fingerprints.

unless you want to bitstream audio or think the fat's fan is a bit too loud there's ABSOLUTELY NO reason to upgrade.

Is it worth REPLACING your phat?
Probably not, the 60GBs are precious.

Is it worth getting a slim in addition to your phat?
Absolutely!

1. Can you still play your PS3?

2. Does it still play Blu-ray's?

3. Is there anything wrong with it?

If you answered 1. Yes, 2. Yes, 3. No, then NO. Just because the fan is loud isn't really a good reason to dump a perfectly fine console just to get a newer model.

Keep your current one until it dies or something goes wrong with it. Then upgrade.

Unless you aren't short on funds, ever, then sure go ahead and buy another one.

I went by this mentality and my PS3 died. I tried fixing it (twice! the first time didn't work) and it died again before I was able to attempt a data transfer. I was able to back up MOST of my saves (about 5 or so are copy-protected ) but I still wish I had gotten a slim before my 80GB died the first time.

IMO, it's better to upgrade early so you don't have to deal with it dying and then trying to fix it yourself (assuming you want all of your saves, etc).

Judging from the OP's PS3/Blu-ray collection, it seems as if they mainly use the PS3 for Blu-rays and not PS3 games. If this is the case, then you can ignore everything I just said. Upgrade when it dies.

It's not better to upgrade early. It's better to make sure you back-up your data. Same goes with computers and iPods. You back up ALL digital media...

I agree with adding it to your collection but to sell your phat for a slim, no.

I have a 100g phat and a 250g slim. I like them both, I need my phat so I can play MGS still since the slim doesn't have the backwards compatibility.

Jmills,

As most of us have posted in here, there's really no point in upgrading. Personally, I have a 60GB Phat that I've come to love like an old child. Down the line, I plan on getting a new Slim unit, transferring my saves from the Phat unit, and passing the heavy movie watching and game playing more over to the Slim unit and relegating the Phat unit to a lesser-visited spare room.

Since I didn't catch which specific PS3 you have, I assume backwards-compatibility is not an issue with you, which in my case is why I don't throw out my 60GB unit. And as mentioned, unless you don't mind that the Phat units don't bitstream HD audio, then why bother?

Ultimately, its your decision. In my case, I love my older earlier gen models. I still have my old gray PS1 as well as the smaller PSone as well as a PS2 Fat and the PS2 Slim-the Slims were bought when prices came down considerably for those units and it was nice to have a "backup" unit around. I always consider the newer Slim units as Sony learning what needed to stay and what needed to be thrown out, as well as the natural progression of technology in where chips get smaller and thus more size reductions overall are possible. I have always found the learning process on Sony's end has always resulted in significantly smaller/slimmer units as well as quieter units, but the units that were there to begin with were generally well-made and less prone to hardware failures than a certain other system that just recently got a slimmer version.

I appreciate everyones input. I own the 60 GB by the way. I mostly use it for Blu-ray's, however I do play GOW, MGS, Socom, and I plan to pick up the new MK.

I wasn't too eager to upgrade I was just wanting input on whether or not it's worth it and if there's a noticable difference between the two (besides the fan)

I am slightly worried about not having backwards compatability. I own the previous Hitman, and MGS titles and keep saying to myself that I'll replay them (still haven't gotten around to it). I do hope that the Hitman and MGS series gets upgraded the way the previous GOW games did though, but I doubt it.

I'm on the fence to be honest.

Yeah I've been debating this myself lately since my 60GB has been running very loud like a jet engine lately while doing anything from playing PS3 games, blu-ray movies, videos & music off my USB external hard drive.

Right now I'm just hoping my 60GB PS3 survives and does not get YLOD or bad blu-ray drive lens eventually and lives until the PS3 Slim eventually drops down to the $199 price range. Then I'll be able to purchase a 2nd PS3 system for my house.

My family had a fat 80 giger that we use for a bd player. I bought a slim to use as a personal player, and of course, the games.

Honestly, is it worth it for someone like you? I really doubt it. It's not much quieter, if at all. I got my slim pretty much day one it came out, so it's been about one year or so. And maybe because the dust has been building up over the year, but it sounds pretty much the same as the fat one. However, that said, the family fat model is pretty much silent as well....so you know. If yours is loud, it may be an improvement. Otherwise the hardware is basically the same. Is $300+ worth a quieter fan?

One other final thing I can say is that the slim does have a more "reliable" track record. Whenever I hear about the YLOD, I hear it happening on a 60 gig fat. Also, on that day when ps3s stopped working for a lot of people, slims were completely unaffected.

I have the MGS collection and play it every once in a while. MGS3 has to be my favorite game of all time and if I couldn't play it anymore I would be sad There are slight differences in the two but not really anything too big. The slim has lost 2 usb ports, backwards compatibility, and I heard doesn't play Blu-rays as good as the fat. I don't really think it can be much worse though, and I never really used all 4 usb ports anyways, but if it is a problem you can always buy something so you can add more if you need. The noise doesn't bother me as well since I'm playing loud enough I can't hear it but the slim is quieter but it does crack sort of like a new house(creepy) I will stick with my fat until it gets the YLOD again I personally think the Fat is better overall but it just depends. I would suggest owning both

from what i remember reading online, the cd & dvd player on the slim is subpar compared to the fats. they had to cut corners somewhere. i use the ps3 for everything so for me that matters.
