Default Syfy's "The Magicians" (Season 1)

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/liv...ries-at-793104

Quote:
Based on Lev Grossman's best-selling fantasy book series.
Syfy is continuing its push to put science fiction back on the air.

The NBCUniversal-owned cable network has handed out a series order to The Magicians, based on Lev Grossman's best-selling fantasy book series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The 12-episode drama stars Jason Ralph (A Most Violent Year, Aquarius) as Quentin Coldwater, a brilliant grad student who enrolls in Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, a secret upstate New York university specializing in magic. He and his 20-something friends soon discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real — and poses grave danger to humanity. Stella Maeve (Chicago P.D.), Hale Appleman (Teeth), Arjun Gupta (Nurse Jackie) and Summer Bishil (Towelhead, Lucky 7) co-star.

From Universal Cable Productions, John McNamara (Prime Suspect) and Sera Gamble (Supernatural) penned the script and serve as showrunners. Mike Cahill directed the pilot. Groundswell Productions' Michael London and Janice Williams (Milk) exec produce.

"The Magicians pilot beautifully delivers a world filled with wonder, fantasy and intrigue," Syfy president Dave Howe said. “We can’t wait to delve deeper into the lives of Quentin and his college friends, as they struggle with the enormity of their burgeoning powers — and unleash them upon the world.”

The Magicians trilogy has been published in more than 20 countries. The conclusion to the series opened at No. 1 last summer on The New York Times' Hardcover Best Seller list.

Production begins in July in Vancouver.

Magicians joins a rapidly growing roster of originals at Syfy that includes 12 Monkeys — already renewed for a second season — and big-swings The Expanse and Childhood's End. The NBCUniversal-owned cable network also has drama series Hunters (from The Walking Dead EP Gale Anne Hurd) due in 2016 and a slate of dramas that also includes Olympus, Defiance, Haven, Z Nation and Dark Matter, among others.

The decision to go to series on Magicians comes days after Syfy canceled Sony Pictures Television-produced drama Helix and amid the network's concerted effort to focus on high-profile science fiction programming.

On the pilot side, Syfy's roster is now down to one: the Ben Affleck- and Matt Damon-produced Incorporated as the cabler has been aggressively going straight to series on multiple shows.
Syfy is really on a roll to put Drama back to 1st place in their lineup. Love it.

Sad to see Helix go, but with the new additions I'd say we have good things coming our way (and can't wait for The Expanse in December).

This has been one awesome show in season one. Probably the best thing broadcast on Syfy in years. I loved 12 Monkeys last year but The Magicians has a superb cast and great story.

You can tell it's based on a series of novels, the storytelling has been dense and better than what we normally get on television.

Its a shame that more people hasn't been talking about this freaking awesome show!
I've also been impressed with pretty well know actors & actresses who have guest starred!

I know it probably want but I'm really hoping it gets a Blu-ray release!

Amanda Tapping from Stargate SG1 directed the last episode!

I hope so too. I've noticed just like Mr. Robot that quite a bit of the dialogue is censored in terms of foul language. So it'll be unrated on home video release.

DVR missed episode 2 for some reason, so I have had all the episodes accumulating and keeping myself from starting watching hehe.

I finally found a rerun of ep 1 & 2 for April 11th, so that's when I'll be able to finally watch the show

Ep. 2 aired as part of a 2-hour "Pilot" if I remember correctly!

Totally caught up with this and there are massive differences from the book. I like them both and am glad to see Syfy start picking up book series that are good like the Magicians and the Expanse. Way better than the crap they usually churn out.

Now if only the Hyperion books could be made into a show....

12 Monkeys is also a solid new addition and Hunters looks promising.

Shows like Eureka, Warehouse 13, Sanctuary, Alphas, Haven, Defiance, Continuum weren't crap though.

The season finale was so horribly bad. They have diverged from the books so far and changed too much for the worse.

If anyone wants a better story I cannot suggest the book enough. It is infinitely better.

I thought the finale was awesome, some of it came as a huge surprise. Granted, I haven't read the books. From what I've heard, most of the stuff from the books will eventually get included in the show.

Julia screws Quinton and everyone else over! I wonder if season 2 starts back from the beginning but Quinton remembers it all?

Unbelievable! My dvr cut off right as they show Julia's eyes glowing, so I record it on demand(let it play on another tv since I can't fast forward) and this goes a couple minutes later before cutting off.
Can some tell me what happenes after the scene where
[Show spoiler]Penny is lying on the floor looking at his severed hands
?
Much appreciated.

Nothing much happens. Julia disappears with the Beast and then the episode ends.

Ok, glad I didn't miss anything. I can't believe both the live showing AND the on demand showing got cut off.

Just binged the first season of this series.
It started slow and boring, to much "high school" but I stuck with it and it grew more and more and now I can't wait for season 2 to come.

Same thing here. I thought the first couple of episodes were sort of goofy. The show was a big surprise to my wife and I and were definitely hooked by the end.
