Post Do you use a lot of bass?

So what I want to know is, do you use a lot of bass? I've always wondered what level you should set your bass at, as mine is at full, but often sounds wrong. So do you use little or a lot of bass?

Depends on what movie I'm watching or if the neighbours are in. If I watch the new Star Trek movie then I tend to max it....... the space battle scenes sound amazing
But otherwise I keep it down just as a matter of respect

This is going to be hard to explain I believe. I think in order to explain properly, we will need some type of reference point.

I'm not sure if I understand by what you mean by full bass or max.

With my receiver, I use Audyssey and that is a calibration tool that my Onkyo is using.

I usually have my sub gain at about half-way up.

The reason we need a reference point, because my half way might be double your full or max.

or someone else could be opposite.

When you are watching your movies, does the bass drown out the words?

Is your bass boomy? Do you feel it as well as hear it?

When a car crash and the bass hit, I feel it in my chest, but some might not call that alot of bass.

What is the name and model of your audio system?

I like a little extra bass, compared to the rest of my speakers. I believe last time I calibrated it to be approx 5 db higher than everything else....but then again, I don't turn my master volume to what I would consider "loud" in the first place. So, as HAMP has said, most wouldn't think it's a lot of bass.

It is really boomy and loud, almost crackly, and it does get into your ears and chest a lot, but in a good way, but sometimes it doesn't sound right, as it sometimes drowns out words if there is loud music in the background.

Sounds like you need to calibrate your system. Don't take away some of the best sounding audio( HD audio ) quality without proper calibration.

Tell us about your system. Someone can give you some idea's to make your system the best it can be. I love advice, I read reviews and how they setup the system for testing.

groundgamer, when you say bass, are you refering to:

the control for bass or treble (that kinda bass)

the crossover freq for your speakers (how low you let them go)

the settings to do with your LFE for the subwoofer

which of these three things are you talking about? i find that people are usually talking about settings for one of these three things when they talk about bass. this will better help us all give you better suggestions if we knew for sure what you are trying to articulate to us.

i also noticed in your gallery that you show a couple of phillips surround sound speakers that you are using, do you still use them and what speakers do you use for your front sound stage? also, what kind of sub are you using? all of these questions answered by you will help.

I am talking about the controls for things like bass and treble, those speakers have recently stopped working so I'm outputting sound directly from my TV speakers, this is why it doesn't sound right. I have my treble and bass to max. Until I get new speakers and a new sub, then I'll have to set them according to the speakers.

Sounds like it's time to do some serious saving to get a nice starter system. I don't know how soon you want to get things or how much you can save in a little short time.

I wouldn't get the same style setup like you had before. You are an experienced audiophile now, still new, but not brand new.

Start off with a nice receiver, then get your front left and right speakers, then maybe a center channel or sub or both at the same time.

You’re on a wonderful site where the people love to help and give some sound solid advice.

+1,

if you shop the deals, you can find some good product for not too much money. You wont have a large selection, but you can get some good stuff. Better then a HTiB.

i agree with the others. if you save you can get a low cost HTiB that will be many times better (and i do mean better) than what you have now. you don't have to spend a fortune either. I can tell you for a couple good hundred bucks you will have a great sound system and it will be many, many times better than your TV speakers.

best of luck and please keep us posted.

I simply let Audyssey MultEQ XT take care of it for me (don't change a thing).

* And I use two 15" subs in my main system. ...Others use four.

i agree with both of you on your responses, however, he is very new to this, has an incredibly tight budget and i think that it's slowly starting to get away from where the OP is heading. he originally asked a question about bass which he slowly let on that he wanted to get some new speakers and such then we found out he was talking about TV speakers for front mains and some old surround speaker for surround use; it was quite the rollercoaster ride! he has made it clear about his budget though. with his budget and what he is trying to buy there will be no Audyssey MultEQ XT or Dynamic EQ at his price level.

it still doesn't change that your right in what you said and yes i still agree 100% but throwing those things in the mix will confuse him especially at his price range.

of course, if the OP finds say double his budget then he'd be able to move forward with the Audyssey advise, but, unless that happens, with what he wants to be able to get, there will be no Audyssey for him. I also think at his level he should start out small and humble and learn about things then work his way up as i believe it will help him in the long run.

hope you two folks understand what i'm saying and this doesn't take an akward turn!
