Personally I'm getting tired of all the speculation about the PS3. E3 is just a month away and Sony will surely announce the pricing there. While I don't know exactly what was said I read somewhere else that he said "about 500 euros", which I think sounds more like 499 than 599 euro. I think 499 euro and $499 US sounds most likely, but we'll see in a month.

Sony France: "PS3 to cost €599 max"

George Fornay, topmanager at the french and European Playstation divisions at Sony, announced that PS3 won't cost more than €599. For the french radio broadcaster Europe 1 he said yesterday that PS3's sale price will be between €499 and €599, a good price when you consider the features. He also pointed on the fact of the presence of a Blu-ray Disc player.
Sony prices it's console a lot higher than the two of it's most important rivals. The most expensive version of the Xbox360 changes owner for €399 in Europe and Nintendo will be far below that price with it's Revolution. The last one mentioned doesn't have HD on board. The introduction of the PS3 is planned for november this year and that release date is also for Europe, Fornay confirmed.

PS3 500 Euro Reports "Misinterpreted"

SCEE tells Next-Gen.Biz that reports coming out of Europe regarding a 500 euro price point for the PS3 were a "misinterpretation of what was actually said."

Yesterday, European gaming media outlets were reporting SCEE VP George Fornay as saying that the PS3 will cost between 499 and 500 euros.

However, SCEE corporate communications director Nick Sharples said that Fornay "didn't actually ever mention a price," and that the interview on Europe 1 radio was "a very wide-ranging discussion about consumer electronics in general."

Sharples continued, "[Fornay and the interviewer] had been talking earlier about the price point of Blu-ray disc players, which are looking to sell around the $1000 mark. The interviewer asked whether a price point of around $500 -- not euros -- is about right. George explained that with all of the high-definition and Blu-ray disc functionality of the PS3, that price would be very cheap and a very good value."

"At no point did he ever refer to a specific price for [the PS3]. He was referring to a 500 dollar price that the interviewer had questioned to him, explaining the relative value of the PS3 console in relation to Blu-ray disc players on the high-end and consoles on the low-end," Sharples said.

He added that pricing for the PS3 will be announced at E3 "at the earliest."

Statements made on French radio have been "mistranslated or misunderstood"

Comments made by Sony Computer Entertainment France boss Georges Fornay which appeared to indicate the price point for PlayStation 3 have been misinterpreted and do not allude to the price of the system, the company has told GamesIndustry.biz.

The idea that Fornay's mention of 499 to 599 Euro price ranges was an indication of the PS3's price point is "a mistranslation or misunderstanding of the discussion, which was actually focused on the relative value of PS3 as a Bluray Disc player," according to SCEE corporate communications director Nick Sharples.

The SCE France boss' discussion of the pricing on French radio station Europe 1 was focused on the fact that the PS3 would be priced very competitively compared to other Bluray products if it were to emerge at $500, but that this price point is well above the range of other game console products, according to Sharples.

"Mr Fornay explained that, with BD and HD functionality, PS3 at this price would be cheap for such functionality, but that current video games machines were significantly below this price," Sharples told GamesIndustry.biz.

"At no time did he suggest or indicate a specific price point or price range for PS3, and any reports that he did so are incorrect.

"He summarised by saying that PS3 would be expensive when one looked at the current price of a video games machine, at far below 500 Euros, but extremely good value when looking at the BD and HD technology inside," he concluded.

While Sharples' clarification of Fornay's comments doesn't actually shed any new light on the question of PlayStation 3's price point - the opposite, if anything - it does open up the possibility that the firm could be planning to introduce the console at a price lower than the 500 Euro / $500 mark.

When the company talks about "current video games machines," it is almost certainly excluding the Xbox 360 from the equation, and talking specifically about the PSP and PS2 platforms - with the implication being that the pricing will fall somewhere well above their price points (between 150 and 180 Euro) but well below the pricing of Bluray devices (between 600 and 800 Euro).

That's an enormous range, of course, but it does leave open the potential for the PS3 to launch at the 400 Euro price point - exactly the same space that was occupied by the Xbox 360 premium pack when it arrived late last year.

basically...when he said 500 is very good value...he meant the system will be around 700...

it doesn't matter what the price is...it will sell out...

plus, I can see this happening...

you can get a generic PS3 for 499 or the Blu-Ray version for 699....

and no matter what...the Blu-Ray version would be the best way to go because you wouldn't need to purchase accessories...much like the HD in the 360...

From what I've read, Sony has stated that all PS3s will have Blu-ray movie playback. If they use a two tier pricing system I'm sure one of them would include a hard drive or something. I think Sony would be shooting themselves in the foot if they released a PS3 which did not support BD movies. Sony is a big member of the BDA, they will do everything possible to make PS3 and Blu-ray a success... both together and as standalone items.

some geek from EB was talking about a possible two tier pricing system...

I just deep down know that the BD player that is built-in the PS3 will be to the BD players what the PS2 DVD player was to the regular DVD players...

why else would the game system be under 1,000 , but the BD players alone be at least 1,000...

Sony has already stated they will not have multiple sku's. One System at one price. Thats, that. As far as price. I will wait for Sony to tell me. Then I will run out and preorder one. Bring it on.

that's what I have heard in early reports...so I stuck with it..

but that is when I heard the PS3 would be about 400...

now I'm hearing the potential of higher prices, so it would make sense to have a cheaper system...

but, to push the BD format...they should make it automatic in each one...and likely will..

Blu-Ray is an integral part of the PS3 for both movie and GAMING aspect, from the ground up. PS3 games will be on BR discs from day one.

You cannot have a "Blu-Ray-less" PS3. You will not see one.

$700 is too expensive for a VIDEOGAME CONSOLE. You will not see it that high, for reasons we've discussed in another thread. I guarantee it.

PS3 will be sold at a loss.
Blu-Ray players will be sold at cost or at profit.
Sony will sell a lot more PS3's than anyone will sell dedicated BD players.

That's why the PS3 will be so much cheaper than a dedicated player.

Also, although I hope and expect the PS3 to be an excellent BD player, it won't have all the features of a dedicated player, so there will be some advantages to buying one, and of course they will get cheaper over time, probably quite quickly if PS3 gets a big foot in the door for HD movies.

Which leaves a problem if you do get both; most HDtv's only have 1 HDMI socket...
