I cant stand box sets, not because i dont like all the movies in the series, but because i dont like how it makes them look different from all the standard releases on my shelf
So i have refused to buy a boxset on blu-ray so far, and have manage to still purchase most of the movies i really want. I waited for Die Hard and now have them all in single releases, same with Xmen, The Mummy series, etc etc Im still waiting patiently (and frustratingly) for the bourne series to get solo releases as its my favorite movie trilogy in a long time, and that still is only in boxset form do you think the alien anthology and back to the future will get single releases at some point? Although in both of those cases i would also like the released individually because theres a few stinkers in there that i dont want to own (Alien 3/Resurrection and Back to the future 3) Thanks |

The Bourne movies have been available individually for almost a year. They are Blu-ray/DVD flipper discs.

Some box sets never will get indivdual releases, simply because it's cheaper not to, and in the eyes of the studios the majority of its audience would prefer everything in one set. Also by putting everything in one set it allows for extras specifically for that set, which will most likely tempt people into buying the whole package, even if they don't want everything in it.
Whilst it may look out of place on your shelf, sometimes you've just got to go with what's available rather than waiting for something that may not come around. You have to compromise looks for content. ![]() |

I get a little annoyed sometimes with the packaging of box sets. Ususally I just put the standard cases on one shelf box sets on another. While it would look cooler to have 4 different cases instead of one box set, it definately is more cost effiectient for both sides, usually, to just have a box set.

Also, it varies by studio on when the go with individual releases. Fox seems to be pretty good about making them available individually. But, I think it took 7 years for Back to the Future to be released individually by Universal on dvd, so I'd say if you want to watch the movies anytime soon, I'd grab the box set when it goes on sale. That way you won't feel as bad for grabbing the movies you don't like. |

Each movie comes in it's own full-sized individual Blu-Ray case in both of those box sets. As far as I know, it's pretty much the same artwork on the individual cases within the set that you get if you buy them separately (the only difference with X-Men is that the box set came with digital copies and the info on the back of each case may reflect that). You are pretty much getting the same thing and most of the time buying them in the box set is cheaper than buying them individually. I don't have them, but I'm pretty sure the situation is pretty much the same with the Bourne movies (someone correct me if I am wrong on this). I think they originally came out with each movie in it's own individual full-sized Blu-Ray case inside of a set-box.... though I think since then the box set was reissued in different packaging (I think they may come in individual 'slim' cases now inside of that set, but I could be wrong). I'm sure you could probably track down the first box set if you look around hard enough. As stated elsewhere, you can get them individually now if it is that important to you, but only in the form of Blu-Ray/DVD "flipper" discs, and you'll probably pay more buying them separately. If you don't like the outer slip-box that these types of sets come in, you can throw it away... or even sell it to someone on here (there might be some people who bought them individually for whatever reason who would like to have the box to put them in). No harm, no foul. I can understand not liking the packaging of some sets like the Ninja Turtles set or today's release of the Back to the Future Trilogy, but I don't understand why you would have an issue with box sets that have the movies in individual cases already. Unless you are finding an extremely good deal on the individual releases, you are pretty much just pissing away money by buying the movies individually in those situations. Even Die Hard is something of a gray area. I personally did buy them individually because I didn't like the idea of all of the discs being in one 4-disc case (I like to have each movie represented by it's own case whenever possible). But if it's a matter of how it looks next to other Blu-Rays on the shelf, the box that the set comes in is pretty much a standard Blu-Ray case, just a little bit wider since it has 4 discs. But it's no different than buying something like the combo pack of "Up" from Disney, which has 4 discs (2 Blu-Rays, 1 DVD, 1 Digital Copy) in terms of the general type of case that it comes in. While I can understand being particular about packaging (I've bought empty cases and have printed up custom artwork for movies that come in crappy box sets before, and I just went through some pretty extreme lengths making custom packaging for the BTTF movies), I really don't understand why you would complain about box sets that come with the movies in standard Blu-Ray cases. That makes no sense. With all due respect, perhaps you should find out more about some of these box sets before you complain about them or decide that buying them individually would be better. I don't see what there is to complain about in the situations where the movies still come in individual cases within the set and it costs less than buying them separately. Short answer is that it depends on the box. But the ones you're mentioning are all very high-profile, big boxoffice type things... so, yes, I would expect those to all eventually get individual releases. (Alien, BTTF, etc.)
However, even if you're pretty OCD, I don't understand why you'd let something like how things look on your shelf impact what movies you buy. If you like a movie and it isn't packaged the way you want, why not just print out a custom cover and put it in a standard case? Seems like a minor hassle vs. avoiding something you want.
