United Kingdom Terminator Advice!

I had T1, T2 and T3 on Blu-Ray.
They where the first ever editions on Blu-Ray. I sold them on ebay.

T1(MGM) T2(Lionsgate) and T3(Warner). (all USA titles imported from amazon.com)

I wasn't happy with the transfers on them to be honest, but now i want them back. is it worth holding off in case they release a full set? if not, what would you recommend to buy. UK, USA maybe there are better transfers out there, skynet edition maybe?

Im in the UK with a PAL UK PS3.

Pleas advise, thanx!

Still not got T4. Whats the best?

Hmm, well you have more to gain by holding off and waiting for future releases. 1. They tend to be better quality - look at Stargate for example. 2. You might get your boxset with all 4 movies.

You could be in for a bit of a wait though.

I have the UK version of T2 (Skynet Edition) and i thought the PQ was fine.

Have heard good things about the UK T3 aswell, although i dont have it, i plan to get it at some point though.

No idea what the hold up is of getting T1 out over here though.

Also not sure if a box set would be even possible in the UK, as T2 is released by Optimum, and T3 and Salvation are released by Sony.

I know in Japan there's a boxset, but I think it's only DVD though. I saw it on Amazon.jp.

The UK edition of T3 is superior to the US edition, both in pic and sound quality.

Personally I'd hold off on The Terminator. There's been confirmation of a Skynet Edition for it. Who knows whether it will be better or worse than the original release but until it's out and there's definitive evidence either way if you can wait then I would.

As for Terminator 2, I have the Australian Skynet Edition. The PQ is quite good and the AQ is very good. There's some DNR but I don't find it particularly intrusive (not in the way that the Star Trek films or the Gladiator releases are affected). The picture still looks quite nice, detail is still present, colours are great and the print is clean for a catalogue title. I've heard and seen screencaps showing that the Japanese release is better, but in my opinion it's marginal and ultimately the Japanese release will cost you more than buying all of the other Terminator titles together. If you think a little better PQ is worth it spend the big $ then go for it otherwise get the UK or AU Skynet Edition for what will most likely be 1/6th the cost.

I own the Australian Terminator 3 release and it is released by Sony and is identical to the UK release. The PQ and AQ are great and are by far the best of any releases worldwide that I am aware of.

As for Terminator Salvation, I don't believe you'll find much difference between any of the releases. I own the Australian release which when I purchased it was a 2-disc set, one BD and 1 disc with a digital copy. The PQ is spot on. The UK and AU Sony releases sport an MPEG4-AVC coded transfer while the US Warner release is VC-1. The PQ is near identical. The US release spreads the theatrical and director's cut versions over 2 discs (Sony's is by seamless branching) but even so, though the US has a higher bitrate I think the use of the MPEG4-AVC coded by Sony makes it even. The AQ is one of the best I have ever heard - the mix is very aggressive. All the releases have a 24-bit DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. Again. the bitrate is higher on the US release but I'd bet in a double-blind test you wouldn't know which was which.

So, if you are going to buy now I think you could safely purchase all three editions from the UK. You'd be compromising a little on PQ for T2, but for all the others you'd be getting discs that are as good or better than any of the other releases worldwide.

Best version of T2 is the Japan Ultimate Edition but its expensive.
There are 2 versions out tho, only diff being version 2 has a booklet, slipcase, the 2 deleted scenes and a DTS master sound track. Both are OOP but you can still pick up version 1 from yesasia I think.

Yep, still available at yesasia. The cheapest UK Skynet I could find quickly looking is at 101cd.com. So your decision is whether the Japanese version at £36 as opposed to the UK Skynet at £7.95 is four and a half times better seeing as though it's four and a half times as expensive. Or to put it this way:

Terminator 2 Japanese: £36 pound from your wallet
Terminator 2 UK Skynet, Terminator 3 UK and Terminator Salvation UK from 101cd.com: £31.39 which leaves you with enough change to get 2 T-700 action figures from them as well in their buy one get one free sale

In a perfect world every release would have the Japanese transfer, but it's hard to say no to the value you get from the UK releases in comparison to a slightly more filmic image on one Blu-ray.

A question I have is whether to get T2 at all now or wait for an anniversary edition? (if they'll be one at all?)

I think you should just buy the UK versions of Terminator 2: Judgement Day (that transfer is pretty damn good, and it's cheap on eBay, so go for it), Terminator 3 and Terminator Salvation (another solid transfer), but import the USA version of The Terminator.

Even if they release a box set, it will be a very, very long time off. So, buy them individually, it's the best way!

Regarding Lionsgate T2 Skynet Ed:

It's been given some bad press for VQ - I don't have a problem with it, to my amateur eyes it's very good.

Bill Hunt at thedigitalbits.com described it as 'excellent' -he explains why in a series of interesting reports. I'll probably get it wrong if I try to explain it so here's a link:

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/mytwocentsa168.html

You need to look from the 19/05/09 and read the discussion about the process, scroll down to near the bottom of the page.

thats not the version I have, its only 1 disc.

thats the 2 disc with both cuts of the film. version 2 of that contains the "extended directors cut" which just features the deleted scene of t1000 in John connors room.

At £52 you really need to love it in order to buy it but I am a huge fan but I paid £30 when it came out.

Yeah, that version is really asking you to throw down some big $$$. I'm a huge fan of T2, but even I couldn't justify the price. The Skynet Edition has extensive special features and the three versions of the film, so for me it's is the most complete release and at a very reasonable price.

I would've waited for a T2 remaster too, personally. It's bound to show up some day.

I would have recommended this version of T2:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Terminator-2-Judgment-Day-Blu-ray/dp/B0019GJ46U/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1271071308&sr=8-5

It is better than the Skynet-Edition regarding PQ, since it lacks the DNR.
