Alice: Madness Returns
Alice: Madness Returns Art Book

Overview

Eleven years ago a horrific fire took Alice’s family from her and left her terribly burned—and her mind terribly scarred. Afterwards she was confined to Rutledge Asylum, struggling to come to terms with her demons by slipping into her fantasy world of Wonderland. Now, after ten years, she has finally secured her release--yet she still bears the heavy psychological burden of that tragic event.

In Alice: Madness Returns, Alice is released from the asylum to a London psychiatrist’s care. As nightmarish hallucinations continue to haunt her and invade her reality, she seeks to understand her torment in order to recover herself. Her mind in tatters, she is unable to resolve the fear and neuroses prompted by her strange memories, dreams, and visions. Her relocation to London seems only to add to their number and intensity.

Perhaps she’ll do better in Wonderland. She always has. She travels there, seeking what the “real” world can’t provide: security, knowledge, and the truth about the past. But in her absence, Wonderland too has suffered. Something has gone horribly wrong, and now a great evil is descending upon what once was her beautiful refuge.

Can Alice save Wonderland—and herself—from the madness that consumes them both?

Features

* Fall into the rabbit hole that is Alice's insanity - Follow Alice back to her private paradise to discover a Wonderland corrupted by the darkest recesses of the mind.

* Alice escapes to Wonderland, seeking refuge from the brutal streets of London, but there are those in Wonderland who seek to cause Alice harm. With an arsenal of unusual weapons, including the legendary Vorpal Blade, Alice is far from defenseless.

* From the Mad Hatter to the Red Queen, Wonderland?s most famous residents are back, but some may not be as you remember them. Return to Wonderland to see what has become of its most prominent denizens when chaos is all that reigns.

Madness through a looking glass
By Todd Kenreck

With a Cheshire Cat, a Mad Hatter and playing cards with sharpened scythes, game developer American McGee asks us to follow him down the rabbit hole once more. "Alice: Madness Returns" is the long-awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed and cult classic "American McGee's Alice" and it's another dark descent into Wonderland.

The first game published in 2000 wasn't a retelling of "Alice in Wonderland" the book; instead, it functioned as a sequel to the Lewis Carroll stories. In this game Alice was haunted by the death of her family in a fire. Alice is committed to Rutledge Asylum and finds herself sinking into Wonderland once again. This time the world has been twisted by her inner torment and the kingdom is now ruled by the Red Queen. Alice escapes Wonderland and regains her sanity, leaving the asylum behind.

Eleven years after the events of the first game, Alice is living in London, but something is pulling her back to Wonderland. In an interview with msnbc.com's In-Game, American McGee fills us in.

Read the rest of the article and interview and see the teaser trailers:

Very much looking forward to the game. However, the, "a great evil has descended upon the land" is an all-too tired trope.

Pretty much every game falls under that.

I totally agree that they should put the original on PSN. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the link for the art book. I added this to the OP.

Looks like this game is up for pre-order on Amazon. No gaming credit promotion yet though.

It's hard to believe it's already been a decade since the original was released. Great game, though, I had almost forgotten about it until I heard the announcement for the sequel. There were so many great games I was playing during that general time period: Planescape Torment, Anachronox, Fallout 2, Icewind Dale, etc.

Good times.

Crazy that you never heard of the original. Maybe you are younger than I am? It came out a long time ago. One of the most epic games of that period IMO.

Single player game only just like the original.

OMG how can you not have finished it? You need to get on that although I wonder how the graphics and everything else hold up today.

Oh yeah, absolutely. But that period between '97 and '02 was a sort of "golden age" for action games and especially for RPGs. There were so many classics and cult classics released within that time period it's just incredible. The original Alice definitely falls into that category. American McGee is again at the helm for the sequel, so I have high hopes for this one!

Hey don't forget that the golden age of space sims was around that time too. FreeSpace, Homeworld, etc etc.

I really miss that time.

Yeah, this needs to happen. The original Alice was very fun and it still holds up pretty well today after close to 11 years. I remember how amazed I was when I played this game back in the day.

The link isn't working but from the name I gather the original will be a download on consoles. Super excited about that although I still have my copy for PC lol I guess it'll depend on how good the port is.

Huh. Thats weird, I just tried the link and it works fine for me.

Anyway, yeah the story is the original game is being released in some way for consoles, whether its a pre-order bonus, or a special code (think mass effect 2 comic n' stuff).

EA has yet to officially announce anything, but when the story comes from Mr. McGee himself, its hard to have any doubt.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/20/al...alice-1-10-ot/

EA has confirmed that the original Alice will be available to those who purchase Alice Returns.

Free with the game and $10 without it.

It will NOT be available separately.

I like this idea, but I expect it be of ultra low quality. The original Alice was an awesome game when it came out and I think many will find it enjoyable today. The original Alice is what Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland SHOULD have been.

If it has 16x9 1080p resolution, I will be all over it.
