Default When the smoke has cleared

And blu ray has won the war what will become of our group. This group has been getting along and is becoming stronger because we are all on the same side against a common foe. For this reason we are united and happy as a group with a purpose. When the war is over I believe this forum will change drasticly. Right now eveyone has a the same feeling a person gets when he joins a gang (bad example but u know what i mean) you feel useful becuase you believe in what others here believe and you feel loved( well u know) but as compared to many of the other forums I am a part of this one has no flame wars and gives you a feeling of being wanted. Sucks that will change someday.....................but I hope that day comes soon because I want to watch all my favorite movies on one fromat and that is blu-ray

Just a though

I would think things would be pretty similiar, just no discussion of which will win..etc. Much more positive talk. Discussion of new movies, how they look, new hardware..etc.

I know this forum will still rock in the aftermath but right now we have a purpose and I guess it gives us a feeling of unity so my point is that HD war has brought people together which is the only good that has came form it..............

I got my first-ever DVD player in June 1999, to commemorate DiVX Armistice Day--
I'd like to say it was my way of smooching a nurse in Times Square, but truth was, I was hoping to dance on DiVX's grave and get a converted player at Circuit City clearance on the cheap...Suffice to say, I didn't.

The weeks of July and August afterwards, though, were the Golden Age to be a newly adopted DVD fan:
To be a DVD supporter in '97 meant isolated geek conversations about Twister and Interview With the Vampire...But to have gotten your first player during those '99 "Starter-pistol" days meant cool conversations about "OMG!--They restored Yellow Submarine!" "Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, you have to own this one!" "Dude, it's all about the Matrix..."

...IOW, once we all got our One Format, it soon became a question of what classics we'd next get to see on it, like we'd never, ever seen them before (and some hadn't)--
Every title for which we could throw away our old videotapes seemed like another step toward the 21st century, and that's what got the conversations going.
(Well, that and the whole "widescreen vs. full" debate, but think we're past that one now. Oh, and seemed like there was some "When will George Lucas release Star Wars" thing at the time, but then, some things never change.)

As someone who got a DVD player in April 97, i can assure you that summer 1999 was a great time to have been into it for 2 years: I was able to sell about 90 of the DVDs i bought between 97-99 at an average of about $12 each, and thus fund even more home theater purchases, because all you newbies were flooding in and it was a seller's market.

Beyond that, the discussions in 97 were very lively, including:

- bitter debates between laser disc die-hards and DVD adopters
- creative ways to get around the 6-city test zone in a pre-amazon pre-ebay online world
- speculation about when hold-outs like disney and fox were going to start making DVDs
- the evilness of Divx
- the paucity of "anamorphic" titles ...

hey, sounds a lot like .. NOW!

Yep, right next to "I just got Pinocchio, but I can't find the 'Character artwork on disk'...Should I return it?"--
There was "Something's wrong with my copy of Matrix...It's all GREEN!"

(Yeah, and something must've rotted my copy of "300", and turned it all brown...)

(Ah, "anamorphic" was a word I'd learned to understand even before ever buying that first player--
In fact, the week after getting that first HDTV this month, I'd spend late nights pulling a few of my old-faithful disks off the shelf, and seeing if they really were the "right kind" of widescreen, or whether I'd have to replace them.)

And right alongside that Summer of '99, there was that good-samaritan site to unite all us early-adopters...DVDExpress.com!
A gift with every purchase, and a discount coupon with every other order!
(Sigh...Moment of silence for one of the unsung Internet heroes of the DVD revolution. )

divx was circuit citys baby - IMO, it was a communist way of watching DVD. You could buy a DVD for about 3 dollars and watch it a few times at no extra charge, and then BAM!!! you had to come out of pocket again for it. I am so glad that S$$T died quickly.

Actually it will probably get flooded by tons of newbies... who don't care so much about Blu-ray except that it's the new DVD.

So it'll probably change..

We can all reminisce about the good ole days and swap war stories about how the Allies (Blu) beat the enemies of freedom.
