Have you heard either of them? if so what did you prefer? When I was shopping for a receiver a few years back I was auditioning everything in my price range, which were, Onkyo 606, Pioneer 1018, Sony 920 and the Yamaha 663. Personally I quickly dismissed the Onkyo because it lacked detail, IMO, that the others provided. Power wise they were similar and I haven't ever been displeased with my Sony. Now I know that many say the 920 was a special unit, but the more resent Sony 1000 was bench tested to provide better wpc(60) then the Yamahas(42) and Pioneers(29)... so even tho everyone is so quick to dismiss Sony, I wouldn't. And personally I would go listen to them and see what you like the best. |

Why is the ONKYO one at frys so good? over the other receivers? I have a Pioneer 7.1 Pioneer VSX1017TXVK 150-Watts x 7.1 at the moment..Havent had 1 problem with it over the years.I just want to have full 1080p AND DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD Thanks fellas this is what im running now..http://www.plasma.com/pioneersound/vsx1017txvk.htm |

I believe your Pioneer has 7.1 inputs on the back, all you need is a blu-ray player with the 7.1 outputs and then you will have 'DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD' on the receiver you currently have. |

OP, that Onkyo TX-SR607 for only $149.99 (brand new) is now the deal of the year!
It is 75% discounted! ![]() This receiver is fabulous and loved by a multitude of people; for its performance, set of features, build quality, ergonomics, and TREMENDOUS VALUE. Even more so now at only $149.99! ![]() Sony is not a major player in the receivers department; it does not have a good Auto Room EQ & Calibration system. Plus it is not competitive with other manufacturers like Onkyo for example. Sony uses a different business approach, and it ain't my bag at ALL! Just google that Onkyo 607 and read all the professional reviews and comments by owners. At the price right now it is simply a NON-BRAINER! I should order at least a dozen of them! It has all the HDMI inputs you'll ever need and has all the high res audio decoders that you're looking for. ...Plus much much more... Enough said. ![]() |

Your current receiver will accept 7.1-channel analog inputs, which is a good thing. Zippo gave a link to a Toshiba Blu-ray player that has 7.1 outs. There are others also that can do the same thing. I would ask how long ago did you buy your current blu-ray player? If it was within 30 days from a store with a good return policy, you could upgrade to another player. Or Just go ahead and buy the Onkyo which is at a fabulous price. If this were me, it would be kinda hard to pick which way to go, but if I had too, it would be to buy another blu-ray player. I’m sure other would go the other way, just as LordoftheRings has commented on. |

Im with Hamp....
I would buy a Blu-ray player with 7.1 analog outs and keep the Pioneer 1017. How you will get HD Audio..... well, you will set the blu-ray player to output the audio via the Analog outs, then using audio inter-connector cables, such as RCA cables, you will plug them int the back of your blu-ray player, you will need one cable for each of the speakers you have, so if you have a 5.1 system, you will need 6 cables, 7.1 system 8 cables, then you will connect each cable from your Blu-ray player to the corresponding Multi-channel input on your receiver, then on your receivers remote you will select the multi-channel input button, now you will have have lossless audio. then plug your HDMI cable from the blu-ray player into your TV directly. There you go, full 1080p video and full lossless audio besides, the Onkyos have HDMI issues.... |

wait a second,.....
your receiver has HDMI inputs and outputs...... does your receiver display Multi-channel PCM or Linear PCM (LPCM)???? If so then its the same as getting DTS HD MA and DD THD, And personally with the way receivers are falling off now a days, I would just keep what you have for the time being.... LPCM is full lossless audio, so if that is what your getting youre golden. |

Guys, the bass management in the Onkyo TX-SR607 receiver would be much better than any BD player.
This is a no-brainer choice! |
