I do not even have a Blockbuster that offers Blu. I rent from Hastings instead.

They pulled out of their "near" bankrupt status. Movie Gallery is the one going bankrupt, thats why all those Hollywoods are closing.

That being said, the Blockbuster I rent from is very good about renting new release Blu-rays, but since people dont have to bring them back for 2 weeks i bet they dont rent them as much as they could. The catalog titles are rarely touched by anyone other than me.

i have stock in blockbuster and it has done nothing but rise over the past 6 months so i dont think they are in trouble money wise. My blockbuster in SLC has actually increased their blu-ray selection quite a bit, but Blu is way bigger here than red . I only know 1 person with an hd-dud player and he hates it. he has the a2 so who can blame him for hating it. sorry about your location bud.

Just thought I'd let everyone know. Thanks for your time.
hope thats not an indication of anything

The sell through prices are outrageous(new movies are 24.99-29.99) rentals are alwaysout of stock and the customer service is less than to be desired, but then again ours is a franchise

It depends on the neighborhoods really.
If they have enough Blu Ray owners, they are going to rent and increase their stock.
If they don't, or if the ones equiped in HD prefer to buy their movies instead of renting, they won't be able to justify the shelf space unfortunately..

The smart thing to do is for every rental store to stock High definition movies for rent and purchase. As more and more consumers purchase HD displays they are going to reduce or stop renting DVD’s and will use High definition VOD and watch high definition premium channels like HBO and Showtime that have a much better picture quality compared to DVD.
When one can get a better picture quality with HD satellite or cable then there really is no reason to rent a 480I DVD anymore. Also piracy has hurt DVD rental and purchases. Blank 8.5GB dual layer DVD’s can be purchases for around 85 cents which is cheaper then a rental. Consumers are swapping DVD’s with friends and making copies.
If I had a rental store I would be aggressively renting and selling BLU-RAY 1080P movies so that business is not lost to satellite and cable.

VOD and the $1.50 kiosks in every grocery store and corner store are killing them. Netflix too.

I think VOD (pay per view ) is a big factor, now that certain studios ( Warner for example) are premiering titles on PPV the same day they are coming out on DVD is going to affect the bottom line for all rental stores.

They're not going to devote the shelf space for stuff that doesn't rent

Obviously in whatever area you're in, here just aren't people coming in for Blu (yet)

My local BB is actually doing OK on them. Not GREAT, but they expect it to pick up after Xmas

I live outside of Dallas in a small town of about 25,000 and my local Blockbuster has about 65 blu titles on shelves that grow with new releases! No HD-DUD titles to be seen anywhere.
