He has a 5.1 system using Onkyo TX SR605 receiver, Panasonic DMP BD85 player hooked up to Polk RM101 speakers and a Polk sub.
The problem: In the past my neighbor (every once in awhile) would hear a loud pop in his speakers and the surround sound would turn off leaving only the TV speakers able to work. In a short time, the surrounds would turn back on. A couple days ago, the loud pop was heard again, the surround speakers turned off and now they no longer turn back on. I was called over and I checked out everything that I could: wire connections, etc., etc. Everything is OK except no surround sound. My thinking is the Onkyo's circuit breaker has been tripping and now gone bad????? Is this a possibility or is there something else we might try??? Last edited by JimShaw; 08-07-2010 at 02:19 PM. |

Regarding the "Bomb"
I read the thread and it seems the 605 may not have the problem??????? A quote from that thread..... it seems that the 605 is not included. the zip file indicates 705,805,875,905,885 Last edited by JimShaw; 08-07-2010 at 03:03 AM. |

By the description, it sounds to me like an issue in the Onkyo. Try some of the different sound options and see if the problem replicates itself. Make some notes so that when you take it to a service depot - if you decide to do so, you can have a very accurate description. It'll help the technician. This is not a speaker problem IMO or wire issue. It really sounds like bad circuitry in the receiver. Is there a reset button, or can you try unplugging it for awhile to see if it resets after plugging back in?

I can tell you for sure it's not the bomb. I have that problem and it would be a very loud POP, but it did not turn off any speakers. The firmware for the bomb is as you said 705 and up.

also quick settings check, go into the Onkyo receiver settings....pg84 in user manual....
HDMI Audio Out = Off if its set to On, the audio outputs through the TV speakers only...Off is the recommended setting. So if he has it set to On, then that could explain why he is hearing audio through his TV speakers and no audio coming from the surround speakers. (Power Control & TV Control = Disable) Last edited by crackinhedz; 08-07-2010 at 05:24 AM. |

As for the issue at hand. Outside of resetting the receiver, unplugging everything from the 605, and trying a new player/input I'm about out of ideas. Has the neighbor had the 605 for awhile and the problems are a more recent thing? Perhaps there is a bad ground or the outlet is bad. ![]() Justin |

This doesn't sound like a firmware problem. It's more likely the amp is some how being grounded, or was grounded in the past. I've seen a problem like this in the past when people tried to chain speaker wire together with out wire nuts, or try to unplug speakers when the amp is running. It can damage the amp to the point where it'll create problems in the future. If this is the case you should have the amp taken in for maintnance if possible.
