Default Blu-ray playback on PC?

Has anyone been able to play a Blu-Ray movie (not a homemade move, but a production movie) on their PC? What software package did you use? What OS are you using? I have yet to hear of anyone doing this. Am I missing something?

Let me qualify my question even more: has anyone attempted to play a BD on a PC with an HDMI/HDCP video card/monitor setup?

The problem is a HDCP compliant OS and monitor

To stream HD movies with your HDCP compliant video card to your monitor with HDCP encryption, you need a HDCP compliant monitor. And, I don't know whether such monitors have reached the market...

And Vista will be the only compliant OS, right?

So lets review.

1.) We have software from Nero, WinDVD and others that are suppose to allow playback of BR movies within that software.

2.) We have Blu_ray optical drives from Plextor, Samsung and few others coming out.

3.) We have HDCP Compliant video cards from MSI(7600GT) and ATI(Sapphire 1600)

4.) We hav HDCP complaint projectors and HDTV's

So what else is needed? With this combination I would hope you could playback movies on an XP Pro system.

Am I missing something?

well if you didn't wanna watch it on a projector or tv you'd wanna watch it on your monitor which might not be hdcp compliant. Your missing the drivers for the drives and good software decoding for nero etc.

PSI,

I am strictly speaking about playback on a traditional video output device(i.e HDTV or Projector)

My point of the post was that it seems we have all the components, at least that I am aware of, that can provide complete DRM'ed point to point solution that they industry has been screaming for.

As far as I know, for proper playback of ANY HD movie on a PC you have to have something along these lines. From what I have read HD-DVD will simply not be allowed until Vista, however Blu_Ray may be different.

Does anyone know excatly what is needed?

Lightbulb Player is needed.

To play back on PC, Intervideo and NTI are racing to release their players some time in the near future. NTI says maybe in one month they will release a player for PCs. Without BD players, you cannot play any BD disk, not to mention you'd need to have the drive also.

Experience is my teacher. I bought and installed a Panasonic SW-5582 onto my PC. Netflix sent some BD movies. The computer knew a disc was there but could not identify it's contents without a player. That's when I contacted Intervideo. Reports state that they are the first to become Blu ray certified. So now we just wait for its release.

Everyday I check the news for players as I am anxious to start using the driver. As it is right now, I bought a very expensive driver that plays SD.

A rep from Opticdisc stated that this unit is what panasonic uses to test all BD players. So once the player software is released, I should be able to watch BD movies.

If anyone learns anything, please post.
thanks

yeah plus you'll probably want new drivers for the panasonic drive so that you get smooth video playback

Same here, SW-5582... Am wondering where we'll be able to get software and firmware for this in the future...

Thing is, there are people out there who have the Intervideo player; we can't even buy it though.

NVIDIA has released a set of PureVideo HD specifications for playback of Blu-Ray movies on a PC.

I have Intervideo WinDVD EX v7.5. When I put a blu-ray movie, the SW-5582 initialize (blinking) for a very long time, tried more than 5 mins, but no movie shown in WinDVD. Any ideas?

sorry I'm still learning. Basically we need HDMI compliance video card and monitor?

Yesterday when I posted my question, I was using X850XT. After it didn't work I checkout some cards at local store and grabbed 7600GT. It didn't work either.

I read that Sapphire X1900 series is HDMI compliance/HDCP ready. Linky. Now I don't see any HDMI compliance LCD yet, only HDCP ready (ie Samsung 19" widescreen). Are we stuck then? Would it be possible to play through the composite out into a receiver?

Btw, I have the latest Intervideo and it recognized as BDMV on the bar.

you shouldn't need hdcp yet as the current titles don't require it.
even the ones that eventually require it will still be playable without it, just force you to a lower resolution.

sony's bluray laptop has no problem to play the current crop of bluray titles from the reviews i've seen. it uses windows xp media center edition 2005 as an os, and i guess the windows media player that comes with it handles bluray just fine. ofcourse it might have some sony-exclusive app installed for bd playback (the few reviews i've seen didn't specify how they played the discs), you better look for people that might've bought this and ask for more info.
the bd drive in that laptop is a panasonic too, so i guess it's not a problem with drive incompatibility and such, though its not the same model as what is now sold for desktops.

Unhappy Must Have Playback Software!!!!!!

Check it out. In order to play movies on a PC you MUST have the software that supports BRDiscs. If you check out the Toshiba HD DVD and VIAO from Sony Laptops, you'll see that they have the INTERVIDEO WINDVD-BD. This has not been made to the public.

I did speak to some dude from NTI and he stated that in a couple of weeks their version of the software should have a release date. Hopefully by the end of summer we'll be able to playback movies.

Reports that that the Movie industry will not impliment HDCP until 2010 or 2012. If that's the case than there should be no alarm to purchase a videocard to playback movies. Me, well I am a dumbass and I purchased a Geforce 9750 from NVIDIA which is the first HDCP ready video card.

I check for release of BD playback software everyday. I guess you can say I'm obsessive.

my guess is that it'll be another couple months until the public can play blu-ray discs on their computers if they bought a drive.

Red face SONY releases their BR drive

Sony has released their version of the BR Drive for PCs. My guess is that the software is getting closer to release to public. However, now that everyone knows that BR and HD DVD movies can be copied using screen print, the release date maybe held up until the Intervideo and Ulead can iron out the kinks.

P.S. I dig this thread. Lets keep each other informed.
