Question The Hourglass Sanatorium

Has anybody ordered the new US Blu-ray of "The Hourglass Sanatorium" and can say if it has a different transfer than the 2015 UK Blu-ray?

Just got this - have not seen the Mr. Bongo disc. According to the Mondo Digital review, it is the 2015 restoration that was part of the MARTIN SCORSESE PRESENTS: MASTERPIECES OF POLISH CINEMA, VOL. 1 release.

I may have to pick up this release. I’m still kicking myself for not ordering the first two Scorsese Polish box sets. I have the Polish digibooks of this and Saragossa Manuscript and they are both “meh”, but better than nothing.

The transfers in the "Scorsese presents" box sets are the same as the Polish digibooks. If the above comments are correct, this release just re-uses the same restoration as those editions.

Thanks for the heads-up. I ordered a copy last night from Diabolik, along with Second Run’s version of Morgiana, so I’ll check it out when it arrives. At least I’ll have a back-up copy.

I got the new Yellow Veil disc today and gave it a quick spin to check. Looks really good so far with solid encoding on a BD-50.

As mentioned, the transfer is not new (looks like a 2K scan from an interpositive) but not bad at all. Yes, a 4K restoration would have been wonderful and, based on the reviews, very deserving but in the meantime this will do just fine.

Bonus features include two pieces by Annette Insdorf, including an introduction. I understand that previous BDs had none, so this is very welcome.

If you notice your player / receiver showing you English audio, don’t worry it‘s all fine.
Yellow Veil encoded the audio in both DTS-HD and Dolby Digital.

This is my first release from them, so pre-ordering the new Has was an easy decision. Can’t wait for more!

I can find references to a "new" 4K restoration from the original camera negative from as early as summer 2020. Although one source does say that was a 4K scan and 2K restoration.

Sources:

Looks like this Yellow Veil release reuses an older master? Sigh... I'll probably wait for another label to release the new restoration.

If it is indeed an older 2K scan that was used, it still looked quite good to me on the new disc. I don't really have any complaints with the transfer.

If an import comes about using the 4K scan, great... as long as it has English subtitles of course. But for now I'm happy with this Yellow Veil release.

I remember being disappointed with The Saragossa Manuscript after tracking it down because it was Jerry Garcia's favorite film. But The Hourglass Sanatorium blew me away. I hope Yellow Veil will release all of Has's films. Assuming they've already been restored.
