Default Why so many poop and fart jokes?

Honestly, crapping and farting are not that funny, why are they in so many comedies?

I agree. I have never understood that. Using that as comedy material is not only NOT funny, but it is a huge put-off to me. This is why I can't stand most Eddie Murphy material, eventhough I find his old comedies funny otherwise.

I laughed out loud in the bathroom scene in Dumb and Dumber, after the laxatives!

To me, I'm okay with bathrooms and poop, but I just don't find "fart" material funny at all.

Maybe the Nutty Professor with Eddie Murphy on it.

It usually depends on how well they implement toilet humor in films. If it's overdone, then the movie isn't funny.

It's not only movies, but cartoons on TV. My kids were watching Johnny Test the other day and all I heard was farting and poop jokes. The dog on the show is even named "Dukey". Go figure.

Many if not all comedies just throw every joke they can into their film and sees if it sticks, if it works, then good, if not, then never mind next joke. That's why we have fart and crap jokes, they're easy to squeeze in and have no effect if they don't work.

Depends on the context. Most of the time it really is not funny, and distracts from the movie. Othertimes, it is comedy gold (see Austin Powers - the bathroom scene cracks me up everytime!)

Because it's a hell of a lot easier than writing clever dialogue.

If you think Hollywood is bad with bathroom humor, you should check out Germany: there's something fart/poop-related in every other German film/tv show/commercial...

everything is not funny to everyone, but it doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with it or them because it's funny to others. I guess that about sums it up.
