Hey guys and gals, I'm wanting to some Western's to my collection (as its one genre I'm yet to explore) and am wanting your recommendations on some awesome western's on Blu ray.
I currently only own 1 Western (Unforgiven), which I havn't seen yet, some an open to suggestions. I'm planning to get How The West Was Won and 3:10 to Yuma, but thats all I really know off. Cheers. |

+1 (The Man with No Name trilogy)
I'll also recommend "The Searchers" which is probably one of the quintessential Westerns ever made. Criterion's "Stagecoach" is also quite excellent. One of my favourites is "The Wild Bunch," and if you don't mind what was essentially a remake of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai then there's "The Magnificent Seven." If you're wanting something a bit more modern, then the remake of "3:10 to Yuma" with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale ain't half bad. Good that it's already on your list. Also, "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" might be worth a look. As for venturing into foreign territory then "The Good, the bad, the weird" is a kimchi western high on action and plenty of fun. Not much by way of plot though as it hangs on a MacGuffin. Oh, I have to mention "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" but I've heard the blu-ray transfer is piss poor. One from your neck of the woods is "The Proposition," which features Guy Pearce. How is that guy not in more films I'll never know. Last edited by TwelveMind; 12-18-2010 at 10:21 PM. |

Tombstone
Unforgiven ( Watch it now) Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford ( best film i have seen in an extremely log time) Those are the only more current Westerns i liked and all are on blu-ray. The Quick and the dead is OK too. |

+1 on both The Assassination of Jesse James and The Proposition. Both are excellent, thoughful westerns (fair warning: a lot of people would replace 'thoughtful' with 'slow') and both are loaded with absolutely fantastic camera work and outstanding performances. Highly recommend both.
The Criterion release of Stagecoach is also well worth a look. It's a great film and the restoration is as good as they get. The Treasure of the Sierra Madres isn't quite a western but it's awfully close. It's a really good film, a very good transfer and Amazon has it on sale now for $14.99. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is not yet available on BD (thanks, Paramount) but the last DVD release was very well done and it's a great movie. This one will seem like a bit of a stretch but it's not as crazy as it sounds: Seven Samurai. Sure, the cowboys all have ponytails and swords but it was the (practically scene-by-scene) inspiration for The Magnificent Seven and features many familiar themes and character types from traditional westerns. |
