Default Old 60GB PS3 with AVR-1910

I just helped a friend setup his Denon with his old PS3 (60GB) and have a few questions.

the 60GB PS3 is out putting PCM right?

when we played "Cars" I selected the lossless codec and "PCM" lit up in the top left of the receiver but it didn't say Multichannel on the display.

I thought when sending PCM it displays "multichannel" or is that a different receiver?

And does it matter what mode the receiver is in? We chose neo 6 as the subwoofer kicked on when we did that.

It sounded good but just want to make sure its set up correctly.

And finally he is replacing the main PS3 with a slim version. Will the receiver auto detect the signal when bitstreaming?

thanks guys.

you should be able to toggle thru the dsp modes until it says multi channel if you switched it to neo 6 the input will say pcm but neo 6 will be your surround mode also go into the sound settings on ps3 and check the output options for surround modes and go into the blu ray menu and set to pcm to make sure your getting lossless

The PS3 will output PCM if you configure it to do so. There are lots of output format options on a PS3.

Cars does not have a lossless track. Lossless refers to data compression and on Blu-ray, that means either TrueHD of DTS-HD Master Audio. Cars has an uncompressed 5.1 PCM track. So, that disc won't tell you whether you have the PS3 properly configured since the player will send PCM as PCM regardless of the configuration settings. Use a disc with a TrueHD or dts-MA track instead.

The PCM light on the left side of the Denon display should be on and the text part of the display should say MULTI CH IN (p43 of the manual).

DTS Neo:6 is a digital signal processing mode used to expand stereo sources to 5.1 and stereo or 5.1 sources to 6.1/7.1. It should not be available in a 5.1 system when the source is 5.1. So, if your friend has a 5.1 system and you are able to use DTS Neo:6, that would suggest the output of the PS3 is stereo, not multichannel. Do you get audio from the center and the surrounds when DTS Neo:6 is turned off? Also, Neo:6 has nothing to do with the sub except with stereo sources.

Yes, the Denon will detect and decode bitstreams from a PS3 Slim if you have not changed the Denon input setting from Auto, which is the default.

Well I came to no conclusions so far.

Set up -

PS3 > HDMI 1 DVD

Output HDMI > Sony Bravia TV

When you play a movie the PCM lights up but it defaults to Stereo. I tried something that somebody else asked which was to make sure the ps3 was reset from scratch. So tried that on mine and sure enough mine has only 2 options of Stereo because mine is setup for my TV only.

On my friends at least 10 options appeared on the PS3. First 2 were DD5.1 and DTS 5.1. The other options were all PCM based.

I remember that when connecting my friends PS3 the display on the amp said "Stereo". I am pretty sure of it. Thats probably why I couldn't find MULTI CH IN or anything like that.

The amp went from 7ch Stereo/DTS neo 6 then it went off into those others like music, hall, jazz or whatever they are.

So somewhere/somehow no 5.1 is reaching the amp/receiver. Unless there is a part of the chain I'm not figuring out correctly.

The usual cause of your problem is the HDMI audio connection between the receiver and the TV. Televisions are two channel devices. If they are allowed to do the audio handshake with the player, the result is a stereo output because that's all the TV can handle. So, make sure to turn off the HDMI audio output from the AVR to the TV. See p28 of the AVR manual. Set HDMI Audio Out to AMP instead of TV.
