Criterion Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman (1962-1973)

Zatôichi: The Blind Swordsman Blu-ray Sept 13, 2016

Zatôichi: The Blind Swordsman Blu-ray & DVD Nov 26, 2013

Quote:
The colossally popular Zatoichi films make up the longest-running action series in Japanese history and created one of the screen’s great heroes: an itinerant blind masseur who also happens to be a lightning-fast swordsman. As this iconic figure, the charismatic and earthy Shintaro Katsu became an instant superstar, lending a larger-than-life presence to the thrilling adventures of a man who lives staunchly by a code of honor and delivers justice in every town and village he enters. The films that feature him are variously pulse-pounding, hilarious, stirring, and completely off-the-wall. This deluxe set features the string of twenty-five Zatoichi films made between 1962 and 1973, collected in one package for the first time.

Alright it's missing 26, but it's still truly stunning. Easily my most anticipated release of the year. I've wanted something like this for years, and Criterion appear to have delivered in spades. Fantastic.

Seven Hells Yeah! That will take a ding out of a wallet though. Marked for the next Criterion sale for sure, hopefully B&N will still be around.

Notice the extras list a book, not a booklet.

The lack of the 26th film has to be the biggest criticism about this set, but its beauty makes up for it somewhat

That is a pretty nice set. I know my dad and I would sit down for a whole weekend looking at all of these. I may have to actually start saving for this. It would be a great thing to sit down to (especially being that Thursday will be Thanksgiving Day).

I am so happy about this. Criterion doesn't really release a lot of movies that I like, but this set is going to be one of the few that join my collection.

18 of the Zatoichi films are streaming for free on Hulu for anyone wanting to sample them. http://www.hulu.com/zatoichi-the-blind-swordsman

If we get a 20% coupon during the upcoming B&N sale, this should be around $80.
