Never really saw a thread like this which I think was long over due.
Which are the advantages and disadvantages of each type of packaging? Which one do you prefer? While the answer might be obvious for most of you I think, I personally prefer IP because of their heaviness. ![]() Steelbook feels like plastic IMO. |

I prefer the steelbook...
if you take a look at the spine...clearly the steelbook is well done.. the ironpack corner and edges look like you find metal scrap from a junk yard ![]() My ranking: 1. steelbook 2. ironpack . . 3. all others including metalkpack PS...since you like heaviness, I have a 100 pounds TV that you can have ![]() |

![]() If you like well made spines, I can mail you my ipod, the spine of it is amazing. ![]() ![]() P.S. I think IP and Steelbooks are meant to be heavier to feel more tangible. Tangiblness is a good thing when it comes to physical media. That why I prefer the heaviness of IP's. ![]() |

hahah, the shipping cost is probably 2x more than the worth of the TV hehee. It's so heavy that I can't even take it to goodwill on my own

the ugly spine is what kills the metalpack...more of a lunchpack...and then they squeeze the title on the bottom half of the spine with smaller lettering...it's just bad design in my opinion. on top of that...the price of them is the same or more than a steelbook/ironpack.

To be totally Truthful I used to not care and wonder why there were people who made such a HUGE fuss over certain movies being released on Ironpack and not Steelbook Ex: Disney Ironpacks that were just released.
There were many complaint and some boycotted actually getting the special packaging and opted for the Amaray. I personally didnt care Ironpack or Steels until i actually bought one. Every Ironpack i have Bought has been covered in surface scratches and if they were in decent condition they scratched easily. My Beauty and the beast & Toy Storys were all scratched and I take great care of my movies. None of my disney steels are scratched and i have had them for a year so Yes they are cheaply made and need to come up with a better finish to coat them in cuz at this time they will scratch even if u wipe them with a cloth. |

I have no preference for either one as well.
THe steelbook spine does look cleaner than the ironpack's spine. However, i like ironpacks spine being completely metal whereas steelbook spine is plastic. I do tend to like the ironpacks art alot better than steelbook and the paint doesnt rub/scratch off as easy as the steelbook. I remember steelbook had a lawsuit against ironpack in copyrights, but not sure what happened. |

The Artwork always determines the first choice. And IMO, for sone reason sometimes it varies. For example metalpacks are the worst of the 3, but the Sherlock Holmes AU metal is great. The quality feels superb!
Steelbook is tge best IMO, but the Total Recall steelbook doesn't seem to be as good quality as most steels are. District 9 is a spectacular steelbook, not only because the artwork, but you can feel the difference when you hold it. The Toy Story ironpacks are average IMO, scratch easily, spine looks rough, but the Romeo and Juliet Ironpack is superb. I don't know if it's the certain companies that produce it that make the difference, or just the paint quality/metal quality used. Cuz through my experience, they all partially differ from each other. I've never liked the inside spine of an Ironpack how there's no plastic like a steelbook, and the spine is nowadays getting better, but still a little rough on the edges. So Steelbooks are still my favorite. But in the end. The most important thing that defines whether we buy it or not, is the artwork! And this post officially is the longest post I've typed since I've joined ![]() Edit: Typos due to iPhone |

I like Coke over Pepsi.
When it come to SteelBooks and Iron Packs, I usually don't get a choice of packaging. So when I make purchase I go by region coding, movie title, cover and inside art. I prefer Unrated/Uncut/Director's cuts, packed with extras and special features. I won't pass on a title because it's packaged in an Iron Pack. I won't buy a Metal Pak. G-1, G-2, I'm not anal retentive, I don't care. ![]() |
