Default Starting Blu-ray collection

Just wanted to know how all of you started your bluray collection. I am pretty new to the bluray game and have only maybe 16 movies like transformers, boondock saints, king kong, kingdom of heaven, independence day, the lord of the rings trilogy, avatar, and a few others. I've seen home theaters on here with bookshelfs filled with blus and I will get there soon. how many blus do you guys buy a month?

well, of course everyone is different, but if i were you, i would come up with some ground rules. because once the blu-ray beast gets a hold, it's almost impossible to quench and slow down

some rules or things to think of...

1. setting a monthly budget ($30 a month?, $100?, $50?)
2. first focusing on your favorite films. upgrading from dvd / buying for first time
3. setting a budget on individual titles ($12?, $15?, $20? no limit?) and then also some people have different set amounts they'd spend on catalog titles from brand new, new releases
4. replay value. does it matter to you? it does for some (like me) when it comes to purchasing something.
5. blind buying. i'd suggest not. lots of money could be waste this way.
6. spending limit on tv shows, tv sets (LOST, BoB) different from just movies?
7. don't just buy a blu because you see it's $7 (or cheaper).
8. look into PQ /AQ. for some, PQ under 4/5 means they don't buy it. does that matter for you, or no?
9. special editions, do you want them, and spend more for them, or just standard editions? there are lots of SE, but they tend to cost more. do you want these, or just regular releases?
10. wait for sales. BF saves a lot of money. especially when amazon PM's everything. drives some people crazy.
11. try not to buy on release day. unless it's a title you really like and can get under $20 (which is kind of a steal in most people's eyes) it might be better to wait a few months for it to drop. some studios titles drop like flies, others do not.

lots to think about, and i would. because i remember when i started, i had no rules in place and wasted a lot of money on blus i either didn't like, paid too much for, or weren't very good (PQ / AQ wise)

by the way: welcome to the site

each month is different, i usually don't buy too many unless there is something on sale that i want...but November and December I tend to get a little out of hand with my blu spending with Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and all the Pre-Christmas deals the stores run...but my biggest advice is to not get out of hand, meaning buy only what you want don't buy for the sake of numbers...just because you see a cheap blu-ray doesn't mean it needs to be in your collection...

I pretty much buy my favorite movies that have replay value.. some months will be more expensive then others.. in the beginning when i just got started I was purchasing a lot to catch up on the ones that are currently available.. I was probably buying 5-10 a month for about 3 months.. then i slowed down, right from the start i went to my local FYE and sold all my DVDs they would take and got store credit and picked up as much as they gave me on the card.. yes i had a ton of movies that weren't on BD yet, but the way i looked at it DVD will be dying out eventually and will not be worth as much, so let me get rid of all of it now and just wait for the BD release... currently every movie that is out on BD that i want i own except for Last Boy Scout (waiting for a seperate release) and The Green Mile (waiting for non digibook release) I do not blind buy, but i do rent and if i like the movie and feel i will watch it over and over i will most likely buy it that week.. this months rentals have been A-Team, and Sunshine.. A-Team i will not purchase and i have not watched Sunshine yet. I also need to get around renting Charlie St. Cloud. The next BD's ill be purchasing is The Town this friday Let Me In Feb. Backdraft. Jan. so pretty much all I'm doing now is waiting for new news about a new release that i want to own

Buy the titles that you enjoy and would play often.

Avoid blind buys. Rent first.

If possibe, avoid impulsive buying. If you see something in a store and are unsure about adding it to your collection, go home first and sleep on it. If you decide later you want it, go back and get it.

I'm in college too, but the best blind buys are the Criterions. No doubt.

Usually order somewhere between 1-2 a week.. I live overseas so it takes a while for them to arrive.. I am more picky about the blu-rays I order, than I was with DVD...

I'm also in college, so have very little money to use on Blu-rays, so like others said, only buy films with replay value and you know you will come back to on a regular basis. In my view that's the key to creating a good collection.

There are members on here with collections of 600+ Blu-rays, which I think is far too many, because you can only watch so many movies and if you can't watch a film at least twice in one year, then you have too many. But that's just me.
So try not to get obssessd with buying them.

opening a can of worms here!

some of my personal favorites. i'll keep my selections based strictly on being a great movie, great transfer, great AQ, and contains some wonderful extras:

Fight Club
(500) Days of Summer
LOST: The Complete Collection
Apocalypse Now: Full Disclosure Edition
Zodiac
Moon
Boogie Nights
There Will Be Blood (but limited extras )
2001: A Space Odyssey

any and all Pixar films

and many, many more. but what genres do you like? everything i listed (except (500) Days) is a slower moving drama so if that's not your cup of tea, then stay away from my selections!

I love all genres. But lately ive focused on pq and aq as I'm in the works of a new home theater.I've heard disney makes top notch bluss. But my last order was band of brothers and planet earth because of recommendations.

Half my collection is made up of animated films and it's pretty small, but there are a few I'll recoommend:-
  • Alien Anthology - Possible 2010's most hyped release and features all four Alien films. There's grat PQ on Alien and Aliens and over 60hours of extras. If you can get it cheap then get it, because you wn't regret it even if it is a blind buy.
  • Back to the Future Trilogy - Another hyped up release of 2010, but like the Alien Anthology, the outcome is great and all three films have a perfect restoration. Maybe not one you need immediately, but you should buy at some point.
  • Toy Story films - Being animated, the PQ is just outstanding on all of them, but what's even better is the trilogy itself is just as amaing and is arguably the greatest trilogy ever. Wonderful.
  • Monsters, Inc. - Another Pixar great1 and a little bit overshadowed at times. Again the PQ is great, although the technology used to make the film does show up onscreen quite a bit, but it doens't take away the enjoyment.

i was actually looking into the alien anthology, back to the future (have the dvd set but want to upgrade), and the toy story films
