Default Sony: Blu-ray set-top players out-selling HD DVD

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 9/5/2007
SEPT. 5 | DENVER—Blu-ray Disc set-top players within the last 12 weeks have begun out-selling HD DVD set-top players, according to recent NPD Group research cited by Sony Electronics.

Sony touted the reversal of HD DVD’s long-running stand-alone dominance during its Wednesday press conference at CEDIA.

Sony VP Chris Fawcett declined to provide exact market share percentages of the two sides.

He said the change occurred mostly due to the introduction of Sony’s $499 player.

Now that's a stat that can be trusted. It's not comparing growth or percentages. Outselling = more units. Who needs cheap players when the customer has spoken and they want quality and a future.

Ive been predicting this since the s300 couldnt keep up with demand at our retail location. Hd ded sits on the shelf and s300 is always sold out. The hd dvd fanboys are going to try to spin this, probably try to somehow lump ps3 or something lame. Oh,but attach rates are better on dud. not!

I would believe it. The Toshiba 1080i player might be the best seller, but the combined efforts of all blu-ray players including PS3 can be really possible.

The blu line went above the red line weeks before the PS3 price drop (July 9). Sweet!

That extends and confirms Rio's Japanese post.

I think that slide may have been shown at IFA as well, because I recall someone describing how BD players had pulled ahead, but the gap had narrowed more recently. Although that shows it was slightly diverging again as of a few weeks ago.

No wonder the utter crap started flying recently. Even cheap prices weren't doing a damn thing for HD DVD.

It would help if more of our side saw it.

It seems they all run up an grab a free cup of price Kool-aid whenever anything gets announced that isn't a dirt cheap piece of crap.

We need a rediculously cheap player that doesn't sell too?

Yes. Because the PS/3 would distort that completely out of whack.

This is funny (at CEDIA today):

Quote:
Toshiba wanted to focus on the prices of its players.... The rep went on about how recently its low-priced unit was number one in technology product sales on Amazon.com--and that the nearest Blu-ray drive was 431st or so.
http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/005344.html

How lame is it when you have to avoid real sales data and instead resort to Amazon sales rankings?

Just to let you know, the hd ded boys at eproduct wars are not to happy with the news on sony taking the lead in standalones. They are already trying to spin, one person linked to avs- where their really not taking the news well. Its very funny. They are using excuses that the a2 was out of stock because the a3 is on its way, or thats its just revenue, even though theirs a graph that clearly says units sold!!. we have those things sittin on the shelf at our store collectin dust, so this news was not suprising . Just found it really funny

Well, hold on there. I bought one of those $499 Sony players. Took it back after 3 days 'cause it was slow. I thought I could stand to wait through the incredibly long start up time. Then I tried the PotC movies and had enough.

Returned it for a PS3 and never looked back. The PS3 is just incredible.

only fault I find with it is the lack of 7.1 analog audio output. so i'm missing the uncompressed audio (for now).

No. With the PS/3, Blu-ray has about a 5:1 sales advantage. Perhaps more considering the big spike in PS/3 sales.

Notice that HD DVD had 80% share in the early summer. That's impossible if you include the PS/3.

Gary
