Canada Alliance Titles 11/3/09 & 11/10/09: Ella Enchanted, Spy Kids 1/2/3

Not many exclusive Alliance/Canadian titles coming in November, but there are still a few worth mentioning. Here ya go:

-Ella Enchanted (Alliance, 1.78:1, Nov. 3, 2009)
-Spy Kids Collection (1/2/3) (Alliance, 1.78:1, DTS MA, Nov. 10, 2009, *Judging only by price, I believe all 3 films will be included in this set*)
-De père en flic (Alliance, DTS MA, Nov. 10, 2009)

Also, not from Alliance but Kaboom: The Tudors: Season 3 (Uncut Edition) comes out on Nov. 10th as well.

Nice Ella ENchanted is cool. A mix of Enchanted (disney) and Princess Bride. A little more corny but since the OAR is 1.85:1 , Alliance won't kill it

Anyone else importing the Spy Kids Collection? I pre-ordered it from Amazon.ca yesterday.

Hopefully they have great transfers & sound. I am assuming they are DTS-HD MA English soundtrack.

Anyone know for sure?

It is Alliance, so it will have a very high bit-rate DTS-HD MA track tied to it. Don't know if its 1080i or 1080p though.

I can confirm that Ella Enchanted is DTS HD MA 5.1, 1.78:1 1080p 24fps. (OAR is 1.85:1 i think...). It look awesome btw. Some darker scene are grainier, but theyre was no DNR applied here...

I ordered The Faculty, Ella Enchanted, Dead Snow and The Tournament from amazon.ca on Tuesday, and the package showed up on Thursday. Amazon's U.S. site usually doesn't manage that. However, no one was here to sign for it, so I will have to wait a bit.

Hopefully, The Tournament and Dead Snow don't turn out to be disappointments, as these are blind buys. People seem to either think The Tournament is pure garbage or highly entertaining.

I almost picked up The Brothers Bloom, too, but I wasn't sure about it (even though I liked the director's first film, Brick). In the U.S., you can currently rent the Blu-ray from Hollywood Video, but you can't buy it until early next year. I rented a copy that was in pristine condition; it looked like no one had ever rented it. An employee at Hollywood Video told me another store near me is selling off all its inventory, so it might be possible to pick up some cheap BDs (maybe even The Brothers Bloom). I might have to go take a look this weekend.

Watched The Tournament, Dead Snow and some of Ella Enchanted.

The Tournament was a very predictable but occasionally entertaining "B" action flick. The story is a rip-off of Battle Royale, but with professional assassins and taking place in a town in England. An action set-piece with a double-decker bus is the highlight. Robert Carlyle acts like he's in a different movie, and Kelly Hu (with a strange accent) gets knocked around the whole movie (but never looks less than hot). Not horrible, but probably best as a rental. The Blu-ray from Alliance has very nice PQ and no extras.

Dead Snow looks very good on Blu-ray with all the bright, snowy scenery. The movie itself takes a while to get rolling. The set-up is similar to a Friday the 13th or Evil Dead flick, with a group of young people (four guys and three girls) traveling on vacation to a remote cabin where all hell inevitably breaks loose. A bizarre scene involves a gal having sex with the chubby film nerd of the group while he's on the toilet (eww). The zombie carnage at the end is funny and amusing, but the movie takes its time getting to it. The Blu-ray from E1 Entertainment comes with a fair amount of extras, mostly behind-the-scenes stuff.

Ella Enchanted looks great on Blu-ray.

Not a fan of the bi-lingual cover, but cool otherwise (and I understand why they have it).

I don't suppose if anyone's heard anything about a US release? If not, I may just have to import it.

I received mine from Amazon.ca on Wednesday.

The movies are in slim Blu-ray cases inside a Blu-ray cover. They are in DTS-HD MA. The cover states they are 1080p.

I haven't had a chance to watch them yet but really looking forward to it.

So the HDD review said parts 1&2 are in 1080i and part 3 in 1080p.

But is the case standard Blu-ray size, with 3 slims inside?

It's similar to the Austin Powers packaging if you need an idea. A nice outer slipcase and three individual slim-size blu-ray cases, one for each of the films. The films are not just packaged together in one standard blu-ray case.
