I imported a version from the UK just before moving across country. Its in its original packaging and hasn't even been watched. Is the US version with HD audio worth the double dip? I don't believe anything has changed with the video.

I rarely double dip but recently did it for the first time for Stargate simply because I like sci-fi movies and the original release was said to have terrible video in comparison to the latest release.

I imported it too... after waiting a LONG time and figuring it never was coming to a US release... and then of course they did!

I believe the US release is a 2-disc one... so I'm sure it has some extras that weren't in the UK version... but I don't know if the movie/show itself is a different transfer.

Yeah I know, I figured it would never come either! From what I have read (like I said I haven't actually watched my import yet) the UK version doesn't have HD sound and the US version does. If that is not true then I don't even need to consider double dipping.

Funny... I haven't watched mine yet either... but I looked at the case and the back art says that it has DTS-HD surround... though it doesn't specify the number of channels.

Yeah I don't think the UK audio track is lossless. This site lists the UK version as DTS-HD HR and the US version as DTS-HD MA. Which is why I was wondering if the upgrade is worth it.

Two different people did the review on this site. They don't even make mention of each other to state the differences or whether there are any. I believe the only difference in the film is the audio, I don't think the video has been re-encoded. However, the US review gets a 4.5/4.5 on a/v and the UK version gets a 4/4.5, but like I said, two different reveiwers.

Here is what I found on DTS-HD HR:

What it is: Similar to Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD High Resolution is an enhancement over standard DTS that offers higher bit rates and better compression. DTS-HD HR is also encoded as an extension to a "core" DTS track. (Note that DTS-HD HR is sometimes referred to as just "DTS-HD", which can be confusing and possibly misleading).

Level of support: Since this codec is also optional on Blu-ray, many players will only extract the 1.5 Mb/s DTS core and ignore the extension.
Examples of discs that use it: 'Basic Instinct', 'Total Recall'.

How to get it:
Toslink or Coaxial SPDIF - Because SPDIF cannot transmit a full DTS-HD HR signal, the player will extract the DTS core and send the bitstream for that instead.
HDMI - If the player does not support DTS-HD HR, it will extract the DTS core, replicating the DTS listing above. Some players may decode the DTS-HD HR to PCM and transmit it over any version of HDMI. Other players will instead transmit the DTS-HD HR bitstream to a receiver for decoding (this requires HDMI 1.3).
Multi-channel analog - Either the Blu-ray player will extract and decode the DTS core, or (on some models) will decode the full DTS-HD HR and convert it to analog.

Well the price jumped back up to 14.99 so, no way I am double dipping at that price. But I certainly would like to know the answers to my questions in case the price drops down again to a more acceptable level.

For $7 you just can't go wrong. It's such a neat miniseries if you can get into it.

I love Oz stuff, I like so much of the cast, so I can get past the not-always feature-film level quality of SyFy production values.

They had me from Kathleen Robertson saying,

"So, the little ***** is off to see the Wizard..."

It was pretty decent for a made-for-TV Syfy movie! Certainly worth $6.99 if you're a fan of any Oz story.

And it has Zooey.

I never shoped at Amazon but I see a promo that if you apply for their credit card you get $40 credit back. So it's getting the disc for free. I may have to apply?

And order $40 worth of dics.

As myself and HDMe have stated, we already own Tin Man. We were just wondering if the switch to DTS-HD MA audio track is worth the double dip. If you really cannot tell the difference in the tracks then IMO it is not worth the $7 since I already own the UK version.

But I am beginning to think that no one can answer the question and I may have to just pull the trigger so that I can eventually answer the question for others.

I still haven't found a comparison between the UK and US version. I know the US version is 2-disc, I don't care about extras, I want to know about how the two films compare in video and audio; nothing more.

I tend to think that if the US release blew the UK import out of the water, that we'd have heard something by now.

I certainly would not think twice about $6.99 for the US version if I didn't already have the import... but since I also don't care as much about the extras... I'm inclined to pass since I already own the import.

Yeah this is true. Although I don't think many people own the US version due to its price but now I imagine a lot more do. I still am surprised that I cannot find a comparison of the UK and US versions. Its seems like such an obvious thing to do in a review. If the title was region locked it would be a different story but it isn't so comparing the two would essentially allow people to pick-up the edition that suits them best or if there are differences in AQ/PQ then the best version.

I guess I should pop mine in to at least check out the audio...

My main problem has been it is a long movie, so it is hard to find a time when I can sit and watch it all the way through... so I keep watching TV releases and shorter movies instead.

Mine is currently boxed up and will be shipped out to me with almost all my other blu-rays shortly after the holiday.
