Is anyone else besides slightly annoyed that gaming is being affected by this stupid "format war" at all?
I really don't see anything in the article that I disagree with, but we shall see soon enough for ourselves. |

I think its the other way around, the console war will determine the winner in the format war. Offering games in large storage units (read blu-ray) will let devs make richer and larger games (if costs allow them). The problem i see is that games will be more expensive because of the disc.

Yeah, it's pretty dumb when console games are going to hitting $60 a pop on average, but I can get that same game, more often than not, on the PC for $39 a pop and it's either as good, or usually better on the PC anyways. |

Sure, while it's true that Sony can't be draconian in their implementation of Blu-Ray (i.e. too high royalties). The format war has already been waged in blogs and articles. The console war will be waged once the PS3 hits the market. The format will follow the lead of the console that sells the most. You can't have one without the other. If the PS3 was to come out with a standard DVD, they'd just be another 360. That's not Sony's goal. Their goal is to take advantage of the best HD media format. Blu-ray is that format. And the extra space (+HDD) will allow the PS3 to set the standard for HD-quality gaming. This is not to mean that games will be 1080p. But 720p would be possible. Of course movies in 1080p is gravy. And the movie industry is salivating at the thought of having a PS3 to sell their movies for them. Last edited by digital.view; 05-03-2006 at 03:10 AM. |
