Default Australian and New Zealand Films

The BBC used to show a lot of Australian and NZ films in the 80s and 90s and I enjoyed them as they seemed so different from the output of the US and UK. I bought Breaker Morant a while ago, I've just ordered Two Hands and I'm looking forward to the Criterion edition of Walkabout. Some of the following have been issued on DVDs of varying quality but some have never appeared on disc at all, anyway here's a random list of titles I'd be interested in on blu.

Picnic At Hanging Rock
The Last Wave
Grievous Bodily Harm
Patrick
Summerfield
The Money Movers
The Surfer
Lantana
Long Weekend
Razorback
The Empty Beach
Came A Hot Friday
Carry Me Back
Mad Max
Malcolm
The Cars That Ate Paris
The Navigator
Sunday Too Far Away
Chopper
Road Games
Romper Stomper
Dirty Deeds
Sleeping Dogs
Underbelly (TV series)

I saw a news post on here earlier that listed Peter Jackson's early films "Bad Taste," "Meet the Feebles," and I think "Dead Alive" as being possible Blu-Ray releases in the future (after being restored). I'd love to pick up those three.

I'm also hoping they'll release Mad Max 1 and 3 later on (got number 2 already, and it looks smashing).

I'd certainly be up for early Peter Jackson on blu, hopefully he'll have the time now The Lovely Bones is finished. I'd also be pleased to see Mad Max 3 and I'd like a better edition of 2, preferably a double disc with the extended TV version.

If you like revenge/road films The Horseman is due shortly on blu in the UK

I know Road Games and Mad Max and would love to see them on Blu Ray. Have to rent dvd's of the other aussie movies you mention and give them a go too as I find many of the downunder stuff really good. Just saw Rogue and thought it was a fantastic aussie flick but the dvd version PQ looked much better than the Blu ray version.

Rogue was fun but I haven't seen it on blu. Keep an eye out for Storage, there doesn't seem to be a blu being issued anywhere but the film's worth catching on DVD

Ok, will check out Storage too, thanks for the tip. Alliance Canada did the blu for Rogue and if one has not seen the dvd version, they'd probably think it was great, but the dvd has much richer color. Alliance Canada has a terrible reputation apparently for bad blu's and Rogue is no exception. It has a yellowish sheen over it that looks really bad. Hope someone else does a remaster.

Just watched Jindabyne and that would make a great blu, the cinematography is excellent. The performances are all first rate, especially Gabriel Byrne and Laura Linney. Ray Lawrence seems to be trying to make Terrence Malik look prolific with just three films in twenty five years but I'd be more than happy to see Bliss and Lantana on blu

Bad Taste Update: Peter Jackson currently still restoring and re-mastering Bad Taste, expected to be released within the next couple of years. Urgent job as the original negative is deteriorating badly.

Info sourced from Jackson comments on 21/12/2010

Yeah you had to push your ignorance of NZ films just that little bit extra by calling Once Were Warriors a documentary.

In addition I forgot to mention Gallipoli - should make a great transition to Blu-Ray.

Look at the news. Its the truth. I say it like it is.
I dont like nz films. Too low budget for me and i understand we are a small country and cant do much.
And Black sheep was just horrible. Absolutely horrible.

LOL, what BS. Can't do much huh. Weta is one the best special effects companies in the Film industry. And I'd hardly call Lord of the Rings low budget. Not to mention Bridge to Terabithia, Whale Rider and Narnia (which was shot in NZ), they are not low budget either.

NZ has made tons of great films and has huge industry heavyweights aswell. For a small Country I think NZ has done extremely well in the industry and I have heaps of much loved NZ films.

Bad Taste, Whale Rider, Once Were Warriors, Lord of the Rings, Heavenly Creatures, Goodbye Pork Pie, An Angel at my Table are excellent and there are more too.

Black Sheep was terrible, but you can say that by alot of US films too.

Man from snowy river I+II or gtfo. That's what I want on blu from australian movies!

The special edition remaster DVD was nice, but now we want a 4k digital master given a full treatment of run-amock bitrate and lossless 5.1 DTS-HD MA.

That would be effing epic.

This movie would make one standout Blu-Ray for AV reference quality - the story, the beautiful Australian scenery takes your breath away - amazing Cinematography - and the soundtrack... the musical score and it's effective use in this movie is sheer poetry in motion on the big screen. The Man From Snowy River deserves the TLC that Fox has provided previously as in the restoration efforts of its major releases - this movie begs a 4K from 35mm negatives source and careful soundtrack care as well. In my mind The Man From Snowy River captures the character of Australia and Australians like no other

Geez, calm down. Just letting you know that I'm not Black, I'm European and have had a pretty good life, so don't assume things.

I really don't get your hate for NZ films. Who cares if they are not made on a big budget, it doesn't make them anyless of a film than a big Hollywood film. And while LOTR was funded by America companies, it was still directed by Peter Jackson and employed alot of NZ film crew, Actors and not to mention really put NZ on the map and did alot for the tourist dollar. And Weta is a NZ company.
