Default LCD Picture "Life-Like" View

I was at my Dad's house and watching the new Family Guy Bluray on his Samsung LED..I noticed that alot of the images were sort of popped out from backgrounds. By no means am I mentioning 3D, it wasn't obviously.

But I noticed it more when watching Cable Channels and noticed that everything looked this way, it was more so that everything in the foreground kind of looked projected a little more. It looked sort of like a Home Movie, but super clear.

Anyone know what kind of the setting this sounds like? Unfortunately I didnt take a pic of how the image looked.

Any help would be appreciated.

I agree with Brad. It definitely sounds like frame interpolation. Every brand has their own name for it. For example, Sony's is Motionflow, LG's is Truemotion, and Samsung calls theirs Auto Motion Plus.

From the Samsung site:
"Samsung’s entire LED HDTV line-up incorporates a number of innovative features to reduce the motion blur and image judder, which traditionally plague LCD HDTVs when displaying fast movement. All three series boast Samsung’s acclaimed Auto Motion Plus™ frame interpolation technology."

Despite what they say in their marketing pitch, it tends to give things that were shot on film the look of being shot on video (like a soap opera, or "behind the scenes" footage) instead of film. Many people (myself included) find it horrible. I always have Motionflow on my Sony turned off.

yeah, kind of sounds like that awful motionflow. some tv's must come with it set automatically on. definitely turn it off, if you dislike it. i can't stand it. makes me nauseous

Sounds like you're quite the home theater "enthusiast".

LOL not really, I doubt I'll ever get a proper HT set-up even if I have the money, due to my horrible hearing, don't really need foundation-shaking sound to make that even worse.

ME/MC circuitry introduces artifacting that isn't in the source, I think it's horrid.

It does produce artifacting on faster motion, no doubt and some are much more sensitive to it than others. My nephew gets motion sickness from the smoother frame rate. I love it and I'd rather see the odd artifacting spot than the 24 frame jitter even though that's what I'm used to since birth. I like a more video look to the motion. However it does make some people nuts. Luckilly you can usually turn it off if you don't want it.

Yea, I researched it a little more and then found the setting on the set. Samsung’s 120 Hz Clear Motion Plus.

I think you mean "judder" not "jitter." Judder is the subtle jerky motion caused by the 3:2 pulldown required to display 24fps source material at 60Hz. Judder can be eliminated on TVs with a refresh rate that is an exact multiple of 24fps (such as 120Hz), without using motion interpolation, which is a separate feature. A 120Hz TV can simply do 5:5 pulldown (display the same frame for five passes in a row). This maintains the original film-like presentation and is free from judder.

In contrast to the 5:5 pulldown mentioned above, the video look that you like is achieved with a motion interpolation algorithm, where the TV interpolates four additional frames between the 24fps source frames instead of simply repeating the source frame four more times. It's perfectly fine to prefer that look, but it's not because you're sensitive to judder.

Nice, I that is a great feature that many displays now offer. Try watching Planet Earth or Life with it on, awesome Would be even better if the movie industry evolved a little and stopped using the archaic 24fps, they should at least double if not more so that panning shots don't look so unnatural and juddery.

Yep thats Samsungs auto motion plus in action. The only time I ever set my Motionflow on my Sony to high is when I am in the mood for it. Otherwise it stays on standard. I like the Motionflow feature myself.

jittery (characterized by jerky movements) "a jittery ride"

A car moving at constant speed across the screen (say the motion of the real car was totally smooth), on a TV that shows a new frame 24 times a second will be more "jittery" than one that shows the car moving across the screen which shows a new frame and a new (accurate) position for the car 60 times a second.

I first saw this iwth Jumper @ Circuit City. But I didn't know what it was before. I thought it was a "behind-the-scenes" segement but it was the whole movie! It made it look all fake, but incredibly real. It has its uses, but makes it look like they're on a set! Some 3DTVs do this, you may want to look into it.

I have grappled with this feature every since I got my Sony. Its the oddest feature I have even seen on a TV before. The reason I say that is because it makes the overall picture look INCREDIBLE clear and colors seems to pop much more with it on HIGH but it does introduce weird artifacts and motion seems odd. So its kind of a catch 22. It looks AWESOME until there is fast motion. I think if maybe profected it might be awesome or is it just the technology itself? It will never really be profected? So its cool and not cool all in one which makes it an odd feature.

Just like 3D.

I wonder how it will look with video games...
