Default Receiver Suggestions

Looking to replace my 6 year old Sony Receiver 5.1 since I feel I'm wasting the uncompressed PCM 5.1 Blu-Ray Audio on it. The Sony can't decode the signal when playing Blu-ray off of PS3. Only shows up as 2 channel PCM. Messed with every setting.

My setup:

Panasonic TH50PX600U
PS3
Directv STB

-Directv STB - HDMI (1) to Panny and Optical to Receiver (SAT)
-PS3 - HDMI (2) to Panny and Optical to Sony Receiver (DVD)

Any suggestions on a new reciever that can optimize the audio out of Blu-Ray, PS3 and Directv.

Guessing setup would change as well but running HDMI to receiver instead of Panny?

Thanks All!

Personally, I really like the Cambridge Audio piece. It's a higher current amp than Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo etc... Not too many bells and whistles but just good solid performance. However, I'm not sure whether the new one has HD audio on it.

look at my sig. i have the yamaha rx-v1700 and it is awesome.

while not to criticize daveps3 too much, current isn't the end all game. watts, ohms, and a number of other things play into something being a good or bad receiver.

I love my Denon AVR-4306 it does all and so much more.
They can still be found for a little over a Grand, and that is half of what I gave.

I would go with a Denon. I just setup a 3808 for a customer and they totally redesigned the GUI since last years models. If you want to spend more you can get the 4308 which has built in WI-FI and HD Radio tuning built in. I need to win the lottery now.

OP - You should be able to get 5.1 from the PS3 as I have a older receiver (Sony STR-DE845) and I get 5.1 thru my optical connection running into MD/Tape optical port in the back.

Entry Level Receivers:

Sony STR-DG910 ($330)

Onkyo TX-SR605 ($400)

Yamaha RX-V661 ($500)

These are all very good entry level systems...all HDMI 1080p/Lossless Audio capable.

Let us know what kind of budget your working with, would help us to offer better advice on a set-up.

i'm currently looking at these 3...all include include Dolby® True HD, DTS-HD™ Master Audio, Dolby® Digital Plus, DTS-HD™ High Resolution Audio, Dolby® Digital EX, DTS-ES™, Pro Logic® IIx, and DTS Neo:6 decoding

Yamaha RX-V1800 $1199http://www.crutchfield.com/S-HoELLB6...00&cc=01&wm=cl

Denon AVR-3808CI $1599http://www.crutchfield.com/S-HoELLB6...8c&cc=01&wm=cl

Onkyo TX-SR805 $999 http://www.crutchfield.com/S-HoELLB6...5s&cc=01&wm=cl

in that order...my understanding is the onkyo's video fidelity is not as good as the other too. so probably not the onkyo.

Hm, I was thinking the same thing (which rec'r to get) since I wanted to take advantage of the lossless audio tracks... I have a decent, but aging Marantz sr-7000 and I don't want to exactly break my bank here. I'm thinking 250-300would be reasonable if I can get a good deal out of something from magnolia (I used to work there, the guys will give me open box pricing on everything). But if not, what are good non-sony products that will do the HDMI audio for the mentioned price range?

thanks!

I'm getting (someday) the onkyo 705..perfect features/price for my budget. 3 HDMI just in case I ever need one more port, a bunch of audio support, 1080p upconversion, and all that for I think $649 on amazon! Of course, at the moment they are sold out.

Thanks!

I just looked at it and I don't think I need to go any further...

Although, just to be safe, what are some other price-competitive models that are out there?

Not looking to spend a ton of money for a reciever. My old Sony still does a good job with the 5.1 on everything else...it's only the HDMI 1080p/Lossless Audio that it has issues with. Budget in the range of $300-$600.

I looked the the 3 Onkyo's - TX-SR605, TX-SR705, TX-SR805. My setup is pretty straight forward. With the 50" Panny, the Directv STB and the PS3 all HDMI. Currently using optical into the Sony receiver as there are no HDMI inputs. The speakers I have are a 5.1 system. Ideally I guess I would run everthing through the reciever but who knows as I am no expert on audio.

I looked at it as well. Assuming I go with it and with my current setup, would you suggest...

Directv HDMI to Reciever IN
PS3 HDMI to Reciever IN
Receiver HDMI to Panny TH50PX600U OUT

I'm looking to buy a new receiver. I was looking at this one by Denon. Does anyone know anything about it? Or anything comparable to it? I mostly just want to make sure it supports Dolby True HD, DTS-HD Master Audio, etc. And it must have 3 HDMI inputs. I could use some recommendations for speakers and a sub, also. I've heard that Klipsch are good quality.

Any input would be superbly appreciated.

I prefer the Pioneer Elites, but the Onkyos are pretty solid as well. Here is a TX-SR705 being sold on Ebay for $599.99 plus $44.99 shipping. Not a bad deal at all.
