blu ray picture on my plasma tv.

Hi how is the picture made up of on a television screen because when i sit away from the tv the picture looks pin sharp when i watch a blu ray but when i get close to the tv i can see lots of tiny dots all over the screen.
Is it made up of millions of tiny dots if so, is this the same for every type of televisions.
Then how far should i sit from a 50" plasma television to get the best picture quality.
When i watch a blu ray movie is the picture still made of millions of tiny dots?
