center channel cut out

I was watching Piranha last night and several times during action sequences my center would briefly cut out.I had this problem last year and had to turn it down a couple of db's.I am using the auto speaker set up on my receiver and I am afraid if I turn it down the vocals will be reduced and hard to hear.Should I do a manual set up?it does'nt do this with every action/horror movies just every once and awhile.
