Talking Kevin Williamson Developing Series Described as 'X-Files' Meets 'Buffy'

Woah, this sounds interesting.

Quote:
One would assume ’round The CW headquarters Kevin Williamson, creator of the network’s biggest hit The Vampire Diaries, is the man. Williamson is developing a new supernatural series about a group of paranormal investigators — described as “The X-Files meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer” — envisioned as a companion series to Diaries. There’s no deal in place, but Williamson’s hitmaker status ought to flush this one through pilot season. Deadline hears that Vampire Diaries co-creator Julie Plec is in talks to co-write the project. The series has no direct connection with The Vampire Diaries.

After a brief lull, Williamson is again approaching the heights of his late nineties Dawson’s Creek/Scream heyday: William’s script for the franchise reboot Scream 4 hits theaters on April 15, 2011.

Vampire Diaries has become quite the fantastic show, a majority of which has to be because of Williamson. I'll check out whatever he puts on the air.

Considering he has created the biggest hit on the network, can you imagine if he made a show that was an even bigger hit and they had two solid hours back to back that crushed everything on their network in that slot previously? Now if the network learned to cater to more than just teen girls is could be a big network, and actually have shows on at 10pm, but for the time being they don't seem like they want to change the model.

Supernatural and Smallville break that mold. Hell (pun intended) Supernatural is more risky than any current network show.

Well the show has evolved into something much more than it originally started. But considering the new show sounds like Supernatural starring women you can see where they are going with it.

I love how he says "It's not Buffy, cause it's on a college campus" apparently he missed a whole lot of Buffy seasons, lol.

Kevin Williamson talks his companion series that's 'full of scary, horrible murder and surprises'
Quote:
If you recently heard the potential companion series to The Vampire Diaries exec producers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec (pictured) are in the early stages of developing described as “The X-Files meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” you may be imagining Alaric (Matt Davis) teaching history at a new high school. “That’s exactly what the show is not,” Williamson tells EW on the latest edition of the TV Insiders podcast, with a laugh. “That was the wrong characterization. I was like, ‘What is Buffy meets The X-Files?’ They’re completely at odds tonally. It’s neither. It’s set on a college campus. There’s a little bit of some paranormal investigation involved, but it’s more about the characters. It’s more about what Julie and I like to do, which is create a world of people. A young girl goes to college, and it turns out there’s a lot more going on.”

That’s all he wants to give away for now. “Warner Bros. doesn’t like us to talk about shows that may never happen,” he says, laughing again. “We don’t know if we’ll get it written in time, or if this will be for this year, next year…. But it’s just something we’re both very passionate about because we’ve got this whole world and this whole sort of mythology about this girl and this journey that she takes. It’s full of scary, horrible murder and surprises, and all the twists and turns that we love to do, but once again it is a story about epic love. That’s what we’re about here at The Vampire Diaries. And that’s sort of why you call it a ‘companion piece,’ is because you will see those similarities in the show. You know, a bunch of fun characters that you can visit every week and watch them go through all these scary, twisty story lines, but it all leads to some greater story about epic and tragic love.”

Williamson says the idea for the new show is rooted in what the season 1 recurring character Isobel did at Duke University — parapsychology. “We burn through a lot of story [on The Vampire Diaries], because there’s such a world here that we don’t really run out of story. It’s more about how do you shape it and put all the puzzle pieces together. We would have all of these ideas for story lines and characters, and we’re like, ‘Yeah, that’s not this show. Nah, that’s not this show.’ And so next thing you know, we had another whole show of all those other ideas,” he says. “We’d get to do all the story lines we couldn’t do in this show in that show. It would be a companion in the sense that they would sort of exist in the same world, but it’s a different show. I don’t want to mess with [The Vampire Diaries]. This show’s gold. This show is very special.” Still, if the series exist in the same world, there is crossover potential, right? “Absolutely,” Williamson says.

Awesome news as I like college settings and you can get away with a lot more then a high school setting. Really hope this get's picked up.

Well this is actually quite surprising. I'm rather curious as to why it's not happening. Last year they ordered six pilots and I believe Hellcats and Nikita where the only two that actually got picked up.

Untitled Kevin Williamson project not happening at CW
Quote:
Deadline reports Kevin Williamson's potential companion series to Vampire Diaries is not happening, at least for now. However The Secret Circle still has a chance at a pilot order as does the music-flavored Acting Out. So far the network has ordered 5 pilots: Danni Lowinski, Awakening, Hart of Dixie, Heavenly and Cooper and Stone, they normally order six.

That sucks as any other network channel will cancel the show as sci-fi shows just don't do good on networks or have to really fight for it like Fringe. I do think they are going to team up VD and Secret Circle as it's from the same author if they even pick it up.

I have no idea what Secret Circle is, but at this point I have no idea what the CW will pick up. Several of their projects from this past season I was really looking forward to never got picked up, so I don't have much faith in them as is.

It's about witches but here is the description sounds boring but I'm pretty sure more happens. Not sure how close the TV series would follow it.

The story revolves around Cassie, a shy sixteen-year-old, who discovers that she is a witch and becomes a member of the Circle of witches of New Salem. She must face the hatred of Faye, one of the witches; her new loyalty to Diana, her best friend and the leader of the Circle; and her love for Adam, Diana's boyfriend.

Didn't New Salem used to be the upstate NY home of Xavier's Academy, before they changed it to "Westchester"? (I keep remembering it being the home of some Marvel location.)

And wait, Williamson's still alive AND with another TV series?
Thought he'd pretty much dropped off the face of the earth after that big-break Dawson's Creek-wannabe ABC show that was cancelled overnight, around the same time as that whole "plagiarism" snit over "Teaching Mrs. Tingle" pretty much confirmed what we already knew.

He's still around as he helped developed the very popular Vampire Diaries for CW and is now working on Secret Circle as well as having written the Scream 4 script as he did for Scream 1 and 3.

Like you said he's never gone away he's pretty much remained in the relative spotlight for the last decade.
