Wit Studio Produces The One Piece Anime Series Remake for Netflix

The Jump Festa '24 event on Sunday revealed that Wit Studio is producing a remake of The One Piece anime for Netflix titled The One Piece. The below Tweet states the anime series is adapting "starting from" the East Blue Saga (hinting that it might cover more than the East Blue Saga, but this is not confirmed). The remake is commemorating 25 years of the anime.

I don't know what the east blue sage is... is that the beginning of the manga? Are they doind a 1:1 adaptation of the manga with no filler? If so, I am incredible interested. You simply can't collect this show in the US. Each set is like $30 and there are over a 1000 episodes- a lot of which is filler i think

East Blue is the first arc, yes. Most of the One Piece anime is canon, but a problem is, to prevent them from catching up to the manga, they try to adapt each chapter into one episode, leading to padding. This is one of the main reasons you've probably heard people complain about the pacing and to just read the manga instead for the last decade.

Spoiler warning: they’re using AI to make this.

Netflix today announced that the manga “ONE PIECE” is getting a new anime adaptation starting from the iconic East Blue saga, sending waves of excitement through the global anime community on the second day of Jump Festa 2024. Titled THE ONE PIECE, the anime series will be produced by the renowned WIT Studio, recognized for their work on hit anime such as SPY x FAMILY and Attack on Titan (Season 1-3).

Currently in production, THE ONE PIECE will be streamed worldwide exclusively on Netflix, marking a significant collaboration with THE ONE PIECE production committee, made up of representatives from Shueisha, Fuji Television Network, and Toei Animation Co.

In a joint statement, the committee expressed their enthusiasm for this groundbreaking project, which will be distinct from the TV anime series that has captivated audiences for over 25 years. With THE ONE PIECE, the committee aims to provide viewers with a fresh yet familiar experience, utilizing cutting-edge visual technology to reimagine Luffy’s adventures through the beloved East Blue saga.

iirc, they caught some heat earlier this year for a short film they made that utilized AI.

Do you mean AI? Get the hell outta here! That's the AI that the current anime industry is doing right now, right?

It's quite doable, I got a friend into it this year! I'd say one thing is, the first half of the anime is paced much better than it later is, it started around 2ch an episode average, and was down to 1.5 ch average for a while etc. Pretty standard for 90s stuff. Way later it got down to 1 ch an episode and I switched to the manga after ep 600 or so myself.

But! I highly recommend watching One Piece, even just some of it, and/or read the manga too. I'd say even if 1000 episodes or manga chapters seems insurmountable (that'd be about 38 series of 26 eps), it's totally doable to check out say the first 100, 200, or 400 episodes. And maybe jump to the manga at some point too.

And I know everyone has different preferences, some need a finished story for example, but so many of my favs are ongoing for decades in manga. Stuff like Hajime no Ippo for example. And a lot of stuff goes on hiatus or doesn't get a real ending, even in anime. So I say it's worth taking some of the journey, especially this one, even if you're not sure you'll stick with it the whole way.

As for the remake, very cool news! Though like I was saying, I think the later half of the anime could use a redo much more than the early stuff, which holds up well for me. So I look forward to them getting there... one day. But hey, more the merrier, always good to have more One Piece. And the story will be ending in the manga within a few years they say.

They need to one pace this because there is way to much filler leading up to every episode.. always have to skip like half of each episode because they recap too much. and is this the first time an ongoing anime has gotten a remake? lol.

It took me exactly 4 months to catch up this year. I started in August and got to episode 1087 this past week.

At first I was watching 10-20 episodes a day, then I slowed down to about 5 after Dressrosa. I lived and breathed this anime. When I wasn't working or sleeping then I was watching it. I enjoyed it immensely. Now I'm reading the manga on the Shonen Jump app to be caught up there too.

Good that it worked for you, but I think most people would not find that workable. Put aside my personal life that would make that impossible (full time job, wife, infant daughter), and the fact that I have other interests to use my time on (reading scifi/fantasy books and playing games). Even from just an anime viewing standpoint, there's no way I could or would watch only one thing for months on end. Too many other good or interesting series out there, and too little variety to keep my interest. I'd burn out on it long before I finished.

I don't know how much the remake could slim things down, and it presumably won't cover the whole manga, but while there's no way I'd take the time to watch the original, I'd at least consider a more compact version.

A remake of a long running show like this is unheard-of, and it makes me wonder if there's some recognition that the massive length is pushing people away from the franchise that otherwise be interested.

Around around this time last year, I started watching the anime for the very first time. While I enjoyed it well enough, I got to about episode ten or so before I realized that I wasn't really in the mood for a (well, at the time) 900+ episode anime.

When the live action series dropped, I REALLY enjoyed that - and it wasn't too taxing for a run time. So if they take the original story and prune down the fat, I might have to give that a go too.

Not exactly a remake and what you mean, but the anime adaptation of the manga "Hori-san to Miyamura-kun" had a still ongoing OVA series, while the manga "Horimiya" got a TV show.

Did you skip op/ed and recaps? Did you watch it with 1x speed?

I don't say watching 10-20 episodes a day can't be enjoyable. But watching 10-20 episodes for several days in a row and a show you never watched before?
This would be an average of 105~ episodes a week. Doing this for like 2-4 weeks even when calculating low would be 200-400 episodes in a month. I mean, how much of the stuff aside from the main plot and the fights can you remember with that much informations in such a short time? After several 100 episodes probably a lot of early episodes details will be gone?

I would get morbidly sick of any show I binged like that, no matter what it was. I would feel like the show was taking over my life. I watched all of Dragon Ball/Z this year, but I started in January and finished today. 444 episodes, 18 short features in 12 months. It took me only about 2 months to watch the original DB (153 episodes, 3 movies), but by the time I got to DBZ, I had to start taking extended breaks every 50-100 episodes or so. I’m taking another couple weeks off before I start GT.

I always skipped op/ed, recap and all filler.

I watched the most episodes per day through the start of the time skip. Once I got to fish man island I started to cut back. Then some arcs like Dressrosa or Whole Cake Island I began to watch more episodes each day. The only arcs that were a huge slog for me to get through were Skypiea and Punk Hazard.

As for what I remember, I'd say all of it? Aside from Skypiea anyway. I was falling asleep towards the end of that arc. I did buy the Skypiea TV special recap on Blu-ray to refresh my memory of it.

100 episodes a week there sounds about right. Once I got to Enies Lobby I was fully invested. When I say all I did was work, sleep, eat and watch One Piece, I am not exaggerating. I didn't take any sort of break aside from when the Separate Ways DLC for RE4 released. I didn't watch any other anime during this time either, aside from Kenshin and Jujutsu Kaisen weekly.

I plan on bingeing the show in 1 sitting. 1nce I finish all the other shows I got piled up on Blu Ray and DVD. I have no personal life. Only where I go is Dr's. Almost died several times and multiple surgeries. I don't have my licensce or friends etc. So all I do all day is watch TV. Binge TV shows or movies. Stop at stores like Goodwill on the way home. From Dr. Last surgery I had messed me up. I had to have emergency surgery and they had to move my stoma. So they put it it where the skin folds together. So everyti.e I get up or sit down my ostimy bag falls off. Plus I have less than 6 inches of intestines and high ostimy output. So it takes 3 nights trying to put a bag back on without sleep. Their talking about moving it again to fix it. I don't have streaming. So I usaly binge all shows on Blu in 1 sitting. Then move onto the next binge in 1 sitting an so on. Sometimes if a season hasn't come out I'll just watch a season of 1 show then 1 season of another show etc.
