Holy hell! To be honest, I didn't expect that Koch would be the one to release this before Severin, but then again, Severin has been waited forever so it's about goddamn time. I'm glad, and not least because Koch's encoding is way beyond Severin's.

I think Miramax pulled the plug on Severin's release shortly after it was announced.

1 Blu + 3 DVDs + CD, that is indeed too many damn DVDs for a single movie when most likely the contents of the DVDs could have been fitted quite easily on the feature Blu and the rest on a bonus Blu. Why not 2x Blu + CD instead?

I don't hate DVDs, it's just that three of them seems a bit excessive.

^ That's what I was thinking about too. I wish that they would tell about those kind of things right away with the announcement.

They could probably put all the standard DEF extras on one BD-50

These German releases always seem to be backed out with DVDs to make the release sound like it's got heaps of stuff, but generally it's useless stuff.

...and then people here would complain that they don't want SD on blu-ray, only HD.

Koch rarely uses Blu-rays for the extras in their multi-disc releases. It's not totally unheard of for them, like the Dustin Hoffman starred western Little Big Man is a BD-50 + BD-25 for the extras. That bonus disc features about 2hrs worth of HD extras and another 75mins of SD so Blu was a reasonable choice. So I'd guess they indeed don't use bonus Blus if there isn't any HD material to begin with.

I suspect that a lot of the European companies that put out "special editions" load them up with dvds to justify the costs of the packaging. Surely something that has 5 discs should cost more than something with 2 or 3. Right? It will also mean a thicker mediabook to contain all the discs and increased weight (which means more expensive shipping).

... I'm sorry.. was I being a little bit cynical?

Fantastic news! I assume the extra's will be pretty much what was on the US 5 disc collector's DVD edition that Subversive did, which is pretty damn cool, always did regret selling that.
