All this talk about The Rocketeer on blu-ray but I have owned this for probably bout 2 years, it's one of the first blu-rays I ever bought from Disney. I remember coz I was well chuffed when it arrived with DTS hd ma 5.1 sound and the film on one side (chuffed coz the dvd was a flipper). Is this gonna be a re-release then or just the first release in another territory?

I got and watched the recent UK blu-ray release of The Rocketeer, which is a direct port of the previous US release. I didn't get the slipcover shown on this site (even Amazon's store page does not show the slip, which I would have liked to have because it's so much cooler than the main cover). Oh well, my view of the film and disc:
While Joe Johnston had made films like Jurassic Park III and Jumanji, it was 1991's Rocketeer that got him the gig to direct Captain America: The First Avenger, and anyone that has seen the film can understand exactly why. Johnston's love for 30's era art deco retro-futuristic style and his instinct for depicting straight-faced sun-kissed classic heroism powers both Rocketeer and Captain America. Of course the Rocketeer is not some mutant superhero but a man with a rocket jetpack that allows him to fly like a bird...once he gets the hang of controlling it, that is. There's a lot of humor that comes from scenes where the hero hotshot pilot Billy Campbell and his mentor Alan Arkin fumble about with the strange contraption that's literally landed in their yard. Of course such a device is bound to have several parties vying for it, and gives the film purpose for its delightful mix of suspense action and comedy. A young Jennifer Connelly plays the love interest and Timothy Dalton is such a terrific suave swashbuckling bad guy you wouldn't mind if he won. At less than 2 hours, the film could IMO have done with a couple more scenes of Campbell's heroics as the Rocketeer but the film is entertaining and there are occasional moments during its flight sequences when the Chris Reeve Superman films come to mind, which is the best compliment I can think of. Disney's blu-ray contains a solid video presentation with a clear lossless 5.1 surround that nicely represents ![]() You can catch the TV special on youtube here: Last edited by ravenus; 07-17-2018 at 09:12 AM. |
