Default All Harry Potter on both formats?

Hey guys,

I was initially under the impression that Harry Potter was Blu-exclusive, then that the 5-movie set was blu exclusive. I'm fairly certain the first two are on both formats, but are all of them dual-format releases? Even Order of the Phoenix?

I continue to mention how I am looking forward to Harry Potter in Blu-Ray, and others say "Isn't that coming out on HD-DVD as well?". I am not certain, not for all movies.

Also, what talking points/benefits should I bring up about Blu-Ray in comparison to HD-DVD (on the Harry Potter releases). I know Blu is superior, but I'd like to know the distinct differences with regards to this release.

I have plenty of people I am trying to convince to go Blu, but I want to have my information correct and not mislead them with a "oh, it's only coming out on Blu" or "it can do all these things that HD-DVD cannot". Don't want to make false claims.

Warner is neutral, therefore, it's coming out for both formats.

Thanks for the very swift response.

Spec differences? I have about 3 people that are HP fans, and I can push them to Blu-Ray, but I don't want to do it under false information.

If you're trying to push your friend into BD you might want to pick something other than Harry Potter to do so...

"The HD DVD edition of 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' will contain a trio of exclusive bonus features, including a "In-Movie Experience" video commentary featuring "the cast from Dumbledore's Army coming together to share memorable moments," the ability to "Pick Your Favorite Scenes" and assemble your favorite clips from the movie into a montage, and additional web-enabled content including downloads and other goodies to be announced."

Not something that would steer me into buying over the BD version, but an exclusive none the less...

HD-DVD has the IME (In Movie Experience) which will be lacking from the Blu-Ray. Don't think that'll make them want Blu-Ray though...

This post looks like almost a set up to get a thread on a Blu-ray forum that may indicate an HDDVD release as being 'better'.

Just tell them they can only watch it in 1080p on Blu-ray unless they fork over a few hundred extra dollars to get the high end HDDVD player instead. All the low end HDDVD players are only 1080i capable (which isn't even true HD). That fact alone should convince anyone.

Ugh.. without going on a terrible rant but I remember when the 'in' movie experience was watching the movie. Doesn't all these little ad-on features ruin the movie? I turned the 'in movie' thingy on on Pirates and it was like some bad VH1 Pop-Up videos.. I quickly grew tired of it. I think all of that is just gimmicky stuff. Give me a good picture and sound and leave all the other junk off and I am happy.

You don't need cheap little games and in-picture scenes of how and why scenes were done the way they were. The commentary track works just fine for that kind of trival information.

It's a pitty that movies are being sold not on their own merit but because of what additional features they offer.

I agree, all that stuff belongs in the bonus features or another disk. I want to watch the movie and enjoy the experence...not dodging pop-ups. I remember and still hate pop-ups with my internet, why do I want them in my movies now?

You said Blu-Ray is superior. Well it is just like PS3 compared to X360, now only if they can harness the superior power. PS3 and BD are far more superior to their counterparts; however, their counterparts are highly favored due to complexity of PS3 and BD. Once we learn how to fully use these features, and then PS3 and BD will annihilate its competition.

• Cell too complex
• BD PIP complications
• BD Java complications
• BD Live complications

IMO, I would give them your honest opinion of both formats regarding both hardware and software and not title specifics. Both formats may have a better bonus feature on their disc, that is trivial for most of us.
Just let them know about all the studio support, 2:1 sales margin, etc, etc.

I would assume Blu Ray would get DD TrueHD and PCM while HD DVD will only get DD True HD. I assume that would be the only difference.

Well, thanks. I was just hoping to have some good points on the Harry Potter, since they are huge fans and were thinking of getting it in some HD format. Was trying to convince them to get it on Blu, and keep getting surprised that we may not edge out an advantage with the Harry Potter title.

I'll try to bring up the Kubrick films (2 of them are fans of that) and the variety of studios. You know, focus on some other strong points of Blu-Ray. I did not mean to bring up Harry Potter as "a set up to get a thread on a Blu-ray forum that may indicate an HDDVD release as being 'better'."

I did truly think that Blu-ray was getting HP exclusively, and was questioning my being proven wrong. Just that my friends were getting excited over Harry Potter on Blu-Ray, that I wanted to get more information for them. But I think Spiderman and the Kubrick films have their interest as well.
