I have a question about blu-ray titles -- from all studios, but especially MGM titles -- that were available exclusively at Best Buy before becoming available in general at other retailers. I wanted to know if their prices dropped soon after becoming generally available elsewhere, or if they largely stayed the same.
I can't recall now which titles were initially Best Buy exclusives but it would be nice to see their price trackers while they were BB exclusives and their trackers after they became available elsewhere, like at Amazon.com. Right now, a few films I really want to buy are available only at Best Buy and are priced at $16.99 at the stores in my city. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) and Hotel Rwanda are among them. That's certainly not a terrible price at all, but I just have this feeling that, once Best Buy's exclusivity deal ends, the prices will drop a bit. And I always like to save money, especially on blu-rays. Did prices drop? What do you prefer to do in this situation? |

most Best Buy exclusives start at $9.99. Anchorman was $19.99 because that's the "Rich Mahogany" Edition.
Hotel Rwanda and The Manchurian Candidate were both $9.99 for their first week at Best Buy. same goes for numerous others. after that most go back up in price for a bit, but not always. if that answers your question...? ![]() |

Since you missed the first week pricing already, wait for the next time they are on sale. As store exclusives, Best Buy ordered more stock of them than a normal catalog release. But they were never going to be big sellers, so eventually Best Buy will want to move them out by reducing the price.

I didn't know about that discount-in-the-first-week policy Best Buy has. Guess I'll just wait for the price to drop at Best Buy (or wait for them to become available at Amazon). How long do titles tend to stay exclusive to Best Buy? Six months or so? A year? Thanks.

Hey BluPix, I saw something yesterday that would interest you. I was referred to Fox Connect's website (http://www.foxconnect.com) by a poster here, which I'm inferring is Fox's direct outlet, and noticed that they were selling The Manchurian Candidate (1962) for $12.99. The same poster also gave me a promo code (qc12yt9ea) that I used for 10% off and free shipping (I checked out with Google Checkout, dunno if that matters but it was easy). I mention this because I was preordering The Hustler digibook for $19.79, but you might want to poke around their site and see what you find.

Wow, that's weird.
Right after I posted my last comment, I stumbled upon a review for Hotel Rwanda here at Blu-ray.com and the page said that the Best Buy exclusivity for that title would end on May 10th. Then I checked The Manchurian Candidate and its page says the same. Hotel Rwanda: https://www.blu-ray.com:80/movies/Ho.../20241/#Review The Manchurian Candidate https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-M.../20071/#Review Both are already up for preorder at Amazon to be received on May 10th, for slightly less than Best Buy's current price. I love Blu-ray.com and Amazon.com. To think I was actually debating whether to purchase these from Best Buy. I guess the lesson here (aside from luck and chance possibly being on my side, lol) is patience is a virtue. ![]() |

Maybe I should wait for another price drop, then. I do remember buying The Graduate, another film in the MGM catalog, for about $12 a couple years ago from Amazon. I don't think it was ever a Best Buy exclusive, though.
