Default Is George Lucas really a bad Director/Producer?

In a different thread there was a large volume of haters who were quite sure of themselves that George Lucas sucks. Please be assured that he does not. I for one found the secound trilogy quite enjoyable. Episode 3 is probably the second best of the series period. Lets be fair. Its not easy to follow up the greatest trilogy ever. I think some people went in hating the sequels just to hate them.

So lets face it. He does not suck.

I don't think he sucks. I think some of his recent attempts at good films have sucked.

I have loved all of his movies I have seen except the 4th Indiana Jones. I still consider him to be the best film-maker of all-time with Steven Spielberg a close second.

I could have dealt with everything wrong with the prequels, except for one thing: Jar Jar.
Lucas could have redeemed himself in my eyes if this character would have been killed, or just left off the third film, but alas, he was still there.
Ruined the whole thing for me, and for that, Lucas sucks, at least a little bit.

And as I recall the one film of the six that he had the least amount of creative control over. Just like Raiders, he wrote an outline and let Lawrence Kasdan write the actual screenplay.

Could've done without the entire Gungan race to be honest with you. I can't tell you just how much it pisses me off that with the newest revision of the saga, the absolute last words that we hear spoken, the words that close out the entire 6 movie series is....."WEESA FREE!!!!" I swear it was like Lucas was giving the proverbial finger to everybody who complained about Jar Jar.

Seriously?

Because I would put Capra, Hitchcock, Kubrick, Allen, Wyler, Ford, Hawks, Cukor, Lester, Wilder, Sayles, Tarantino (yes, he's a freak, but the man can direct), Altman, Keaton and Chaplin, and many more ahead of him. I think he fails based on his editing style alone- god, those horrible cross wipes just about drive me out of the theater. He made blockbusters, along with Spielberg, that just about wrecked the (quality film) industry (now how many theaters can we open the first weekend?). He is a niche director who made a lot of money. His movies, just like Titanic/Avatar, make plenty of money but don't make the grade as "great" movies. I did like American Graffiti, though.

This reminds me of our pal bruce pullen.

Anyway, it'd help if you explained what Lucas supposedly sucks at, because he does suck at some things. He's good at coming up with ideas or general concepts, but when he tries to write those ideas down into scripts or direct them, he sucks at those aspects of making movies.

It's therefore probably not a coincidence that the best SW movie is one of the two that he neither directed nor wrote (or co-wrote) the screenplay for.

Oh poo, Empire is not the best SW movie. It's the second best one behind RoTS.

I really don't have a problem with George Lucas or the different versions of HIS movies. As far as I'm concerned, the man is a genius and always will be because of what he has done for the movie industry. I know people are upset with him because of the changes he made to the original series of Star Wars but hey he's indicated that this was how he always pictured them to be but ran out of money. The way I look at it, currently on DVD you have a choice of purchasing a collectors set that contains both original and updated versions as well as a version with the updated version on its own (I don't believe the original versions are available by themselves on DVD). I know the updated version was provided on DVD before the original was provided so that alone probably is where most people have a problem, but moving on... IMO, you now have a choice which version to buy which suits me just fine. I believe we will see the two versions on Blu ray when they eventually release.

The man is a genius in my mind because the technology (SFX and audio) boost that he gave to the movie industry. I truely believe we are able to enjoy the great audio technology of Blu ray (DTSHDMA, PCM, etc.) because of his vision created all those years ago. I'm sorry but I just can't be angry at a man who has done so much for the industry and to consumers...IMO!!! But hey that's just me!

i think he's a great story teller but his writing skills aren't the best. if another writer were to rehash his original scripts, they could be stellar!!!
