Default Want a new Display badly - HELP!!

I currently have a toshiba 65 rear projection tv and it has been amazing since 2008 when i bought it. But my co worker just bought a 55" vizio lcd display and i was watching a movie called torque on tbs over there one day, and it looked phenominal. It looked like the movie was being filmed in front of your eyes. This must be because of the refresh rate right???

I believe my toshiba is 60hz refresh rate, and his i think is 120hz is that why it looked so smooth when panning?

Well i know vizio isnt that great of a brand, but I dont want to go much smaller than a 65" display considering I sit about 15 ft away from the tv.

So my question is, can i stick with rear projection and get those realism qualities of a lcd?? Or should i go with a nice led lcd?

I also dont want to spend more than $1200, any suggestions??

what do you guys think of this one?

Being a fellow baseball fan, I'll try to help you out. First off, I've always bought plasma, because to me, it's the superior tv. But if you want to go lcd, that's fine. That link doesn't work for me. But I looked at Best Buy and didn't see any 65" lcd's for $1200. You're going to have to spend at least $1,600 for a tv of that size. $2200 would be a better bet to find something of that size. And if you're going LED, that will cost you even more than an LCD... a LOT more.

You ever thought about going plasma? On Best Buy, I found a 59" Samsung plasma for $1700. I know you want to only spend $1200, but this seems like the most tv for the money. I'm not a Samsung fan, but it can't be that bad of a tv.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+...&skuId=2146553

Or, you'll have to trade off tv size for the money. I think a 55" LCD is more in your budget. Hope this helps.

thanks for the replys guys but i really dont think i want to go less than 65" just because im used to it. I was liking the Mitsubishis but i was curious if they will have that Fast pased panning motion like i saw at my friends house.

Does that have to do with the refresh rate??? Because my toshiba is a 60hz, so the jump to 120hz on a rear projection is the same as the jump to 120hz on an lcd

Also, its always good to see a fellow Twins fan

I know how you feel Ryan!! I was the exact same way when I wanted to upgrade my display. And from the same 65" TOSHIBA you have!!
My personal opinion is that Mitsubishi is the leader in DLP Technology. Dont get me wrong......my toshiba (and yours) is still badass!! The PQ is VERY NICE. But I think Mitsu produces a better PQ. So in terms of your question......yes, the Mitsubishi is a better tv. On top of the features it has.

Amazon has the exact same one for 100.00 cheaper.http://www.amazon.com/Mitsubishi-WD-...AVFRQNY7135CM2 Free shipping with prime!!

I bought my Mitsubishi 65 inch about 1yr. and a half ago, for $1000 and at that time THAT was a killer price, I was very skeptical about DLP t.v.'s because I never owned one, this thing looks amazing!! for $700 bucks you can't go wrong!!!!!! If I have time this weekend I'll post pics in my gallery of some screen shots of it.

But does DLP's refresh rates compare to LCD's refresh rates?

Meaning, does 120hz dlp compare to 120hz on a lcd??? I really liked the way my friends 55" vizio display looked and his is a 120hz compared to my 60hz.

Although I'm not 100% sure(per specs) on your question I would say it's probably as good or better to my eyes. DLP TV's are extremely underated and Mits DLP's are top of the line. DLP isn't popular mostly due to the depth of the set. If you see one in the store it will likely look "dull" but this is due to poor calibration in most cases.

I just was TV shopping for the last month for a secondary TV in my upstairs living room. After all my research I was dead set on a LED. Once in the store and looking close I just couldn't go with a LCD, even after I messed with the calibrations. I ended up getting a Panasonic plasma.

Don't get me wrong....this is all a matter of opinion on what looks good to my eyes. IMO it takes a $1800 LED to compare PQ with a $1000 DLP or Plasma. LED's have some sweet sets, but they are expensive as hell.

What series is it? Probably at least a Sammy 7000 series if not 8000. If so, those are stunning! I was looking at 6000 series and was stunned at first glance...then I looked close and was disappointed. IMO those high end Samsungs are like the old Pioneer plasma's...incredible PQ but of the charts in price.

You're right it's a 55" Class (54.6" Diag.) 7000 Series 3D by Samsung.

Hey buddy!!!

As you know, I had the Toshiba 65" 65hm167 too, and loved it back then. You remember mine was stolen, and I had to get something better to make myself feel better.

I have loved my Panasonic 65" Plasma far better then my old DLP.

Look around for a great sale on a Plasma, while your looking, make sure to save much more. You will be a lot happier with a big upgrade instead of a slight upgrade, with getting another DLP.

Note to all DLP lovers, I understand your passion, because I had one, but my Plasma is far more superior then the DLP I had. So please don’t flame me, I love the whole Home Theater Passion that everyone has.

Won't flame ya, lol. A top notch panasonic plasma is almost impossible to beat and would be my recommendation as well. However, given his price range and size needs, I believe he's only gonna come close with a DLP. I haven't seen a DLP that even comes close to a Mitsubishi. They own that market, even though it's dying out. They are in a class of their own!

OP....I don't think you can get a good tv in your size and price range. I'd wait and save for about a 1500-1800 dollar set. Like Hamp, it's just my opinion.

Plasma is the easy choice IMO unless you have a bright room. Samsung makes good plasmas now and I wouldn't buy a sharp. From what I've read, it's pretty hard to tell any difference on anything above 120hz. If you have 2 grand to spend, get a plasma.

What about burn in with plasmas, or what precautions do i need to take with them?

What is normally recommended for plasma tv's is a 100 hour break in period where you run content that will fill the entire screen and turn all of the picture settings (brightness, contrast, etc.) down to 50 percent. After that, I normally use a calibration disc of some kind to get the best picture settings possible
