India is playing Sri Lanka, trying to win their first Cricket World Cup title in almost 30 years. I had never watched any cricket until this year, but I find it a very interesting and easy to pick up.
Sri Lanka batted first, and each team in One Day International matches bats for 50 overs. A match lasts about 8 hours because one over is six pitches, so each team receives 300 pitches and tries to score as many points as possible. You can hit the ball any direction in cricket, and you get 4 points for hitting the ball all the way to the wall and 6 points for a homerun. The fielders try to prevent the ball from reaching the wall, and they throw the ball back in to try to throw out the runners on a single/double (1/2 runs). There are several ways a batsman can get out, but the most common two are that the fielders catch a popup off his bat or that the pitcher knocks the sticks (wickets) behind the batter. India is currently batting and has 122 for 3 through 24 overs. Tendulkar is already out. Sri Lanka hit 275 for 6 I think. It's gonna be pretty close but India has their work cut out for them. |
