It does get a lot of hate. I've only seen it once, but I enjoyed it. Though now that I look back on it, Depp's portrayal of Wonka was weird as hell, even beyond the usual Burton weirdness

You know he was basically playing Michael Jackson, right?

I recently watched both adaptations back to back recently, and I like them both about the same. They are different enough that I can respect them as unique adaptations with different points of view. I like both Wonka portrayals as well. Think they both fit in their respective films perfectly.

I've always really liked this film. Quite bizarre to think that it's been ten years. I remember seeing this one in the cinema.

It gets more right in the adaptation than the 1971 film does, and I generally like it more. I especially appreciate that they didn't make the mistake of having Charlie sneak off and break the factory rules like the 1971 film. That always pissed me off that he got away with that while all the other kids get screwed when they mess with things.

That being said, Wilder is what makes the 1971 film work.

I like the squirrel scene better than the goose scene in the original film, but that's about it. I dislike the rest of the film, and would take those silly oompa loopas with the orange painted faces over a bunch of them with the same exact actor's face done with CGI. In the original story, where they all identical twins?

No, but in the original printings they were African pygmies, which Dahl later changed to all being white w/ gold hair.

Wow 10 years already! I remember my grandmother taking me to see this. I don't care what anybody says it's a really good movie and I'd take it over the Wilder version any day (not saying the Wilder version is bad though).

I'll keep my old disc, since I except the transfer to be exactly the same. After all, it's Warner.

This looks awesome. I might have to buy this movie again. Unlike everyone else, I love this movie because it is more accurate to the book than the 70s version. The only thing that movie really has going for it is Gene Wilder and the boat scene. Don't get me wrong, I like the movie a lot, it is great, but it is not even remotely accurate to the book.

Which is sad because this is actually a much better film and adaptation than the 1971 version. Roald Dahl actually hated the final version. This film is much closer to the spirit of his book. The reason that film is so beloved is because of Gene Wilder's amazing performance. Other than that, this trounces it in every possible way.
