United Kingdom Split Second (1992) Rutger Hauer

Due in June from 101 Films http://www.amazon.co.uk/Split-Second...s=split+second A bit pricey at the moment but Amazon prices usually fall closer to the release date

Not even sure it's seen a DVD release over here before.

This might be it at Zavvi (the release day matches...), if so it is currently £15.99!

http://www.zavvi.com/blu-ray/split-second/11088044.html

Might do a pre-order to lock in that price and then keep an eye on Amazon as well.

Watched the dvd a couple of weeks ago. Not as good as I remember, forgot how much UK based it was, locations, actors and quality.
Would upgrade as the dvd is not the best PQ at all, but has to be £7.99 maximum.

The 101 Films catalogue releases have all been £6.99 instore at HMV recently so it may well be worth waiting.

I never saw one, the US DVD has been expensive which seems a bit silly when there's a German one. Apparently there's a TV version of Split Second that runs about six minutes longer, it would be nice to have both versions on the blu or just the deleted scenes.

Apart from The Hitcher there are plenty more old Rutger Hauer titles I'd be happy to see on blu - Blind Fury, A Breed Apart, Wanted Dead Or Alive, Surviving The Game, The Osterman Weekend, Wedlock, Salute Of The Jugger (available as a poor quality import) and Legend Of The Holy Drinker.

I'm not sure whether HBO was involved in the production of Split Second or if they simply issued the US DVD and VHS, but it would be great if 101 Films (or anyone else) could get the rights to Cast A Deadly Spell and Witch Hunt.

Hauer has made more bad movies than any "good" actor should.

Split Second is one of them.

Such heresy.

Granted, it's not the definitive Rutger Hauer experience. That's gotta be Wanted: Dead or Alive (overdue a Blu of its own).

He hardly made them, just took the paycheck to star in them. Let's face it he's the main reason anyone would take a punt on dross like Blast. I sadly watched it in my early teens as a Mortal Kombat fan, thinking, "Johnny Cage is in this, will give it a go". Was a slog to watch back then so won't revisit.

Rutger's best performances are in Verhoeven's films. Blade Runner being obviously the best of his English language films.

Haven't seen Split Second, but am intrigued and hopefully it will rest in the guilty pleasure territory alongside Streets of Fire ect.

Hopefully this will be a even better transfer than the upcoming German blu-ray that I have very low hope for

I have to say I think Legend Of The Holy Drinker is his best performance, even better than Blade Runner. It's only available on DVD from Italy and the French dialogue parts have no subtitles. I've just found out there's a Japanese blu ray which I shall order next time I get some other Japanese stuff, even though I suspect it'll be similarly deficient in subs

It amazes me that the 2 disc dvd of The Hitcher has never been transferred to blu.

One of the best eighties b-movies out there. Great sci-fi distopy movie.

Yeah, it's deemed an 80's classic and features exquisite cinematography the great John Seale which is just screaming for a HD upgrade. I have the 2-disc DVD set which is terrific, and from memory, I think it's through Studio Canal, so I'm guessing they probably still have the rights to it. Kinda surprised it hasn't surfaced on Blu yet.

Note that there are at least two versions of SPLIT SECOND. The standard 90 minute (PAL 86 min) version and a TV version. IMDb lists it at 90 mins and 96 mins (extended version).

I'm not sure if the Japanese VHS release mentioned below is the TV version or a third assembly. I also seem to recall censorships issues back in the 1990s, but my file doesn't have any info on this.

From IMDb:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105459/...1?ref_=tt_bd_4

The japanese vhs is uncut,It runs around 6 minutes longer. It contains three main new scenes, one where Durkin and Stone visit Durkin's girlfriend Robin, another where Durkin and Stone talk in the car and one where a jogger is killed.you can find it online
I noticed the Movie-Censorship link below, but I'll look at this after work. I assume it mentions the longer version.

In Italy, the movie has been renamed "Detective Stone" and aired on primetime on a very important channel.

The upcoming german blu-ray will have standard r-rated cut and the extended japanese cut as a SD bonus if I remember correct.
