Default Impressions of the Harry Potter 1-5 Giftset as I watch...

Harry Potter Years 1-5 Blu-ray

Harry Potter Years 1-5 Blu-ray Review

With the lack of review of video/audio from this huge release today I figured I'd post this because I know I've been looking for reviews all today with nothing to be found.

I'm watching the Sorcerer's Stone right now; about 15 minutes in. The opening scene with Dumbledore outside with Harry being "delivered" was grainy but not bad. Typical for a night scene and not distracting at all. The scenes inside the house and at the zoo really pop and look great. Really nice booming surround sound once they get to the lighthouse with the thunder and lightning. On the train with Harry and Ron eating candy there's a slight grain I can see but it's not bad. Nice sub boom as the doors to the hall open and the score sounds great. Lots of surround use as the score plays. Some skin tones look a little hot and too bright washing out the details here in this scene. Skipping ahead to the scene with the troll in the bathroom......Wow, loud scene here. Sounds great! Booming bass and surrounds used a lot here. Very impressed! Skipping to the Quidditch match......looks and sounds great! Very bright and colorful! I could see the detail of the makeup on Snape's face.

I could skip ahead through more scenes but I've seen enough. The Sorcerer's Stone looks DAMN good and the PCM soundtrack is amazing!

Moving on to Chamber of Secrets.......

Gotta love the golden Warner Bros logo along with the title Chamber of Secrets in HD. Opening scene in the house looks to be on par with "Stone". Maybe a little less grain. Impressive. Dobby looks great as well. Sounds great when he's slamming his head against the dresser drawers! Skipping ahead to the chimney travel scene.......whoa! When the green flame erupted as Ron transported it really shook my house!! Flying car/train sequence sounds awesome! Tons of surround and bass! Wow! I can definitely tell an improvement in skin tones and grain here with Chambers. It looks quite good! Something that's really stood out for me with these 2 movies so far is how crystal clear all the voices are coming through the center channel. They sound just so perfect. Clear and robust when necessary.

I feel like I'll be repeating myself watching these and posting my thoughts. If the first 2 movies look and sound this good the rest, especially Order of the Phoenix, must be as equally impressive if not more!!

Moving on to Prisoner....

"Prisoner" starting off back in the house again. Picture quality, dare I say, looks even slightly better than Chamber and much better than "Stone". I can finally see some real depth to the character and environment now. Detail is definitely sharper here and looks really nice. The scene with the Dementor sounds great!

Something has come up and I won't be able to watch them all tonight. Suffice it to say Warner Bros has given us great video and audio quality here. If you were worried about buying this entire set, don't. It's worth every penny!!

I was planning on spending the night with Lost Season 3, but after 4 episodes it was time for a change.

I haven't seen Philosopher's Stone since it came out, so it's nice to be rediscovering it...and in such high quality. 4-star video for sure (there's some artifacting in foggier scenes - when Hagrid flies into the picture at the beginning, for example, or when they're in the boats headed toward Hogwarts).

I knew the third would be great. It's still the best in the movie series, IMO. I got the 5th today and couldn't find the 3rd, so that'll be my next purchase. The rest will be bought as I go along expanding my collection. Oh yeah, can't wait to see the 3rd in Blu!!!!

The 3-D pop of the fireworks scene with the Weasley twins stood out for me, eye candy galore.

The "duel" at the end was also eye candy galore, great effects.

Both scenes are outstanding reference material IMHOP.

I'm really glad to hear with reviews and here that WB took their time and did a good job with these films as they are classics to me. They are among my favorite films up there with Star Wars and I would have been very sad if they gave Harry Potter the same treatment as they did with some of there other releases.

i think the only thing that warner fell short on was the individual cases, the inserts seemed like crap if not cut short.but who cares as long as the pq and sq is outstanding

cant wait till they make the last 2 movies

Is there enough room in the "Trunk" to fit the next two movies in (when they come out...)?

If you remove the bookmark box then there should be enough room, maybe loose the DVD game too.

Question I have been trying to get the answer to...
The "bonus disk" , is it a blu ray disk or just a dvd?

I got the 5th one yesterday. IMO, Casino Royale and Spider-man 3 both had better PQ. But nonetheless, OOTP looked excellent.

My wife read most of the books in order and has seen the first 3 movies at the theater as well as countless times on SD TV as well as a couple of those in HD on pay-per view but after watching only about 40 minutes of the first movie the other night, she told me she saw details in the blu ray version that match the book descriptions she remembered that she was never able to note before in the other viewed formats.

That's just 40 minutes or so into the 1st movie. Sounds like she's in for a fun blu ride the rest of the way through the 1-5 collection I bought her.

Prisoner is my favorite in the series and I thought it looked the best. I'm biased though!

Versus SD DVD at 480p, these Blu Rays blow those away..
