Default Both formats can coexist...

How many people think both can survive for a long period? Say 5 - 7 years, until the next format comes along.

The proposition that both formats can coexist is basically an HD DVD talking point, developed after it became clear that the red side was not going to win.

Imo they can coexist in a niche market with very low sales (unwanted, it´s the way of SACD/DVD-A) or if they sort of join forces in world full of dual-format players (VERY unlikely).

I don't believe they can co-exist. At least not mass market. Producing discs in both formats increase costs. Most companies threw their hats into the ring and made a gamble with a format. They will battle it out until costs become to great compared to possible future rewards and then one side will fold. I think Sony will win this one mainly because they have more to lose.

The problem is that you can't get ALL movies in BOTH formats. Die hd-dvd, die.

For mass market adoption it is essential that we have only one format. The majority of the population will stick with DVD until that happens, unless studios force them to upgrade by ceasing to release on DVD.

Screen Digest is wrong - this holiday season will provide the three major exclusive Blu-ray studios and the one neutral studio with so many reasons why they are releasing on Blu-ray and (Warner notwithstanding) not HD DVD and will give them very little reason to want to release on HD DVD.

Even 1 million installed players would not be reason to change.

With the number of major companies releasing Blu-ray players next year, HD DVD's end is writing on the wall my friends, writing on the wall.

Screen Digest said Sony, Fox and Disney, which back Blu-ray exclusively, could lose $175 million next year by not releasing films on HD DVD as well.
why don't they say "uni and para which back hd-dvd exclusively, could lose more than $1 billion next year by not releasing films on blu-ray" ? (estimate of blu installed base 6:1 to hd)

bias article.

If one does not take a clear lead within 18 months, people will be less likely to buy into players (we've seen that even as low as $219, HD-A2 is selling less than S300, it's not just price, you have to make people want HDM). With less people buying players, some of the best movies controlled by Lucas, Spielberg would have less reasons to release older movies. With less movies, there will be less people buying players, hence putting a cap on how fast it grows.

One of the more likely scenarios would be some new hit movies, new oscar winners also don't get released in either formats. At some point, without sweeteners or subsidies, it could just be that some studios will just bypass both and go to the next thing.

The real thing to see is what UNITS of players are sold this xmas season. If both sides do bring more buyers in, that would show there is interest in HDM, and that could be enough. But looking at the current sentiment, I doubt the messaging will get past the "there's 2 formats, I'll wait until all the movies show up on one" reality check.

they can't co-exist if Warner decide to switch to BD by next year, after evaluating christmas sales. but co-existant might happen if warner pick HD DVD.
In japan, how can we called it co-existant where BD has 94.8%???
Mostly in asia, HD DVD DOES NOT EXIST!! Believe me in this one. I did my survey.

I think that outcome to be highly likely. A stalemate may force more companies to produce dual format players. Then it is down to the studio to choose the format of their choice for given titles.

Very clearly an HD-DVD biased article. They mention how much Blu backers would lose without so much as hinting how much HD-DVD backers lose?

And they actually state that Paramount and Universal are behind HD-DVD while just stating that "four studios are behind Blu-Ray" without naming them, except to name a couple later on and show how much money they'd lose?

I don't underastand why the majority of articles I read are HD DVD biased. Why aren't there more articles out there that are fair, or at least Blu-ray biased?

Probably reflects a stronger propaganda effort by the red side.

different for me, I never clicked HD DVD sites. When I searched Blu-ray HD DVD, the ones that came up is bunch of neutral article praising BD
