Well I hope this prediction is wrong by screen digest. If both formats coexist for several years I would like to see the technically better quality BLU-RAY format have 70% or 80% of the market.
I agree with this quote “Recent decisions by Paramount and DreamWorks to support HD DVD exclusively gave more life to the format, which serves to extend the format war, Screen Digest maintains.” The recent Paramount decision will slow done the sales of BLU-RAY players and will cause a small increase in combo player sales. Toward the end of 2008 when combo players are priced under $500 then this will cause both formats to coexist for several years with a increased interest in combo dual format players. I agree with this quote also Quote “Cooper concludes that both formats will be adopted but at a slower rate than some in the industry was expecting.” http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6479296.html |

I do think that one format has to win the war before the combo players become really inexpensive. It didn't take long for dvd+r and dvd-r to sort of merge and the similar can happen here (remember when dvd players can only play a certain type of disc?). Heck today Best Buy lowered the LG combo player to $799.

Some things can co-exist, however I don't see how something as mainstream as HD media can. There has never been a time when any from of entertainment media was able to co-exist together for the entire life cycle of said media (with a close enough of a market share in respect to each other). Inevitably one will have to concede to the other.

I wouldn't be in such a hurry to hope the prediction is wrong, it would mean that consumers en mass even noticed they existed. i.e. good for hi-def media in general even if it wasn't solely our format of choice.

Meh,...HD DVD will NOT last until 2011.
Blu-ray has all the variables still in its favor--CE backing, IT backing, Hollywood backing, better marketing, better durability, etc. etc. The only thing the Paramount announcement did was delay the inevitable...by about 6 months IMO. |
