Default PS3 reballing service

I have been reading that "reballing" your PS3 is a more permanent solution to the YLOD and you can have it done without any data loss. I could be wrong, I only have a rudimentary understanding of the process.

Can anyone confirm this?

Does anyone have any experience getting this done?

Can anyone recommend a place or a good method for finding a place that can handle this well?

I called a local repair shop and i was told there is no "permanent fix." He said he would be willing to take a look for free and maybe fix it long enough to transfer the data to a new PS3. I kinda think thats the same thing my friend can do for me though .... I dont know what I should do, i just want my data recovered, i dont mind buying a new ps3

Reballing SHOULD be pretty good at fixing the problems (vast majority of YLOD, it's the solder of the RSX to the mainboard). A bunch of guys on the official boards were trying one vendor on evil bay, but it's basically too soon to know the long term reliability. Certainly better than DIY/heatgun/toweltrick type shenanigans.

I want to get my CECHA01 done one of these days.

Most of the local guys do DIY/heat-gun style repairs and not full on reballing.

Again, I don't think it's worth the hassle.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the PS3 slims runs 30-40% cooler than it's original counterpart. The YLOD was very common in all the fat PS3s and although it's not completely fixed, the PS3 slim shouldn't give you any problems.

Do the temporary fix, backup of your saved files and go buy a new PS3. At least it'll give you piece of mind

I was in the same situation a while ago with my 60GB PS3, I did what I had to do, got it fixed with the DIY method but instead of doing it myself I sent it somewhere else. After that I got everything of the hard drive that I needed and deactivated it before trading it for a PS3 Slim. I think you'll be better off doing the same thing unless you have a 60GB and backwards compatibility is important to you. Good luck!

I thought about reballing my PS3 when I got the YLOD just after Christmas. At that time, I couldn't find anyone who was really offering that service, or had any sort of success rate to show for it.

I ended up sending my PS3 to http://www.sudburymods.com for a reflow and most importantly, a modification to the PS3 fan. They were the only place I found that modified the cooling system AND offered a lifetime guarantee.

The fan mod is key, because it keeps the system from overheating in the first place, causing the YLOD. The fan modification turns the fan on immediately when powering up, probably to the 3rd speed, without waiting for the PS3 to warm up first. Now, my PS3 doesn't even get warm, no matter how long I use it. Granted, the fan noise is now constant, but it's better than getting the YLOD again. I've been running it a lot since early January, and I have not had an issue since.

I would highly recommend checking out the repair service offered by Sudburymods. Following is a link to the Tips and Trickis thread, where I related my experience with them. I have no affiliation with them whatsoever, except as a happy customer.

I had my launch 60gb done by that guy back in January 2010 & did not have any issues with it until September of last year when it YLOD for a second time. I was playing it pretty regularly too. So I went ahead & purchased a Slim 250 & then "reseated" the GPU/RSX on my 60gig myself because I now have access to the proper equipment to do it. Now I have two functioning PS3's!

So cliff's notes version is an ordinary reflow followed by fan modification? In that case, liquid cooling would be ideal, though a bit more maintenance heavy. Depending how you do it, it could be silent, too (put the radiator portion somewhere else). Anyone around here liquid cooled a fattie PS3 yet?

So you've been going about 4 months... good case study. Please keep posting!

By reseating are you using the existing solder or reballing, too?

Do you have a link for your ebay guy? How long did it take to get the PS3 back after u shipped it, and how much was it?

Nice. If I could guarantee it's reliability I would easily pay another $600 for a reliable CECHA01... so far skeptical on everything.

Here's the link to his service on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ht_2282wt_1396

His website:

http://www.jdelectronicsinc.com/

It cost me $65 for the service & about $40 for shipping round trip. He works out of Michigan. And I want to say from the time I sent it out to the time I got it back was 2 weeks. Good service if you are not confident about doing it yourself & you get YOUR PS3 back with all of YOUR data! I have to give Marine Mike & his thread credit for turning me on to this guy.

As you should be & nothing is forever either. After my 60gig failed for the second time, I wasn't about to send it back out to somebody else again & I have an electrical background, so I figured I could do it myself & I tore the PS3 apart & saw what was what it was pretty easy to repair. If my 60gig takes a dump again, I'll just breathe life back her to again...she's my "precious".

Not saying I couldn't but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it. If I messed up your PS3 for some crazy reason than I would feel bad & owe you a new one. The guy in Michigan is only 4 hours away from us. Plus with my work schedule (I'm in the Navy & I'm Navy Drill Instructor) I don't know when I'd be able to get to it. With the Michigan dude you know when you'll get it back. Furthermore, you couldn't afford my fee, which is 1 Million Nuka-Cola caps! Seriously, you'd be better off sending it to the Michigan dude.

Well, going back to all those debates we used to have (not you, just people in general), I don't expect it to last forever. But at least a year or so per hundred bucks would be nice., and 6-7 years isn't unreasonable IMO. I was also pleasantly surprised that the PS3 was very user accessible in it's assembly and disassembly, much like one of old my old VAIO, with nice tabs everywhere to take apart and put it back together with ease. But putting down a few hundred dots of solder by hand with a template isn't my idea of a good time. If it was worthwhile, I could see getting one of them rigs but so far, not convinced.

I <3 the Fattie 60GB with it's chrome trim and card readers and extra USB ports like no other and have always been disappointed about the later fatties (with their cheap flat silver and painted on logo, etc) and completely ambivalent about the Slim... My Sony fanboyism was forever shattered when my 60GB ate it following the SXRD debacle. I still prefer their stuff, but my confidence in their engineering or brand name isn't what it once was. Like everyone else, name of the game is seemingly planned obsolescence.

I dream of a CECHR01 fatty with the guts from the Slim and daughter boards for PS2 BC and card readers, etc.

It's really not that hard. Plus there are some good YouTube videos on the tear down & build up process.

Here's a really good walk through for you! Good luck!!

F***ing A Man! I agree! I use my Slim now for all my entertainment needs & I use my 60GB for media storage (music, MP4s, etc.).

I had asked this in the PSN outage thread when I think Uxi was talking about his 60GB Phattie but wasn't expecting an answer since there was already a heated debate going on 'bout everything else

Figured I'd ask in here: Does anyone know if the refurbed PS3 60GB Phats that get sent out as replacements get the same thermal paste/job that was done with the original 60GB launch units?
