Default The Glimmer Man (possible Director's Cut)

This was the last Seagal movie to get a theatrical release in the UK for 4.5 years. I saw it at the ABC Cinema in Edinburgh on November 1st 1996.

What a lot of people don't know is that the movie was cut to shreds by Warner (and much further by the BBFC) before release to make it a "more marketable" 91-minute typical Seagal fare, much like what happened with Out For Justice, which was also cut, rearranged, and significantly altered from its original version.

It's not a bad movie, but the weakened plot compromises the production design and rather good action scenes.

There's not much of a chance of Warner giving us a director's cut, but an expanded version of the movie would result in the plot making much more sense and give it a bit more weight. It would also remove any confusion around Seagal's wardrobe changing several times during the movie (who changes their outfit 3 times a day)?

This and Fire Down Below are the only remaining Seagal movies left from Seagal's tenure at Warner that have yet to be released on Blu-ray. Maybe we could petition them to do a DC if it is not announced soon.

What about On Deadly Ground? The best of the three yet to hit Blu IMO.

Didn't he change his clothes to make himself look slimmer? Maybe they should change the title to The Slimmer Man.

I hope this is on WB's docket for this year, along with Showdown in Little Tokyo.

All three of those vintage era Seagals are really overdue on blu-ray. Glimmer Man would be ace with an expanded cut, but I'm fine with the film as is. Just get this, FDB, and ODG done already! Maybe we should be looking internationally?

Wow. I know some TV airings restore a couple of deleted scenes, but never knew there was an entirely different cut. I've always enjoyed the film as it is, but would be interested in seeing this other version, provided the theatrical cut was included as well.

I never cared much for On Deadly Ground (Seagal's weakest theatrical outing, IMO), but I would definitely buy good Blu-rays of this and Fire Down Below.

FYI, the title makes no sense.

If his victims/prey only saw a glimmer of him before being killed then how the hell did the story get out?

Haha. So true. Anyone who has watched this movie a couple of times has wondered this. You've just got to lay logic to one side in favor of the cool badass back story moment.

My apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but as a Seagal fan I'm curious as to what the evidence is for this alleged heavy re-editing by Warner Bros.? Only about 10 seconds of cuts were made to The Glimmer Man for its British video release (based on the R-rated cut) by the BBFC. I know additional scenes were shot for Out for Justice, but wasn't this just standard fare in the 1990s to fill in the gaps left by the cutting of violence for American television? If there's any official evidence for the heavy reworking of these two films, I'd love to see it.

The shooting script, photos, cast and director admissions, editor complaints, noticeable narrative flaws in the flow of the movie (see also Hard to Kill), suspiciously neat and tidy 90-minute running times.

For those interested, this got a release in Spain last year:

Not a director's cut though.
