France Le Dernier vol (The Last Flight)

Karim Dridi's Le Dernier vol a.k.a The Last Flight (2009) has received a preliminary release date for the Gallic markets: April 2010. Courtesy of Gaumont.

(Pre-release info):

French actress Marion Cotillard will return to Gallic film-making starring in the E15 million ($24.0 million) Sahara-set adventure-romantic drama, "Le Dernier vol de Lancaster" (The Last Flight).

Cotillard will shoot "Flight" in Morocco from January after coming off Rob Marshall's musical "Nine" for the Weinstein Co.

Cotillard's last French film, "La Vie en rose," won her the actress Academy Award this year.

"Flight" will be 100%-produced by Gallic mini-major Gaumont, with Franck Chorot taking a producer credit.

According to Loic Trocme, Gaumont head of sales and acquisitions, "Flight" will be introduced to buyers at Cannes.

Screenplay is by Remy Waterhouse, from an epistolary novel "The Last Flight of the Lancaster." A tempestuous tale of conflict -- between colonial forces and local insurgents, old and new loves, and men who face off for the love of Cotillard -- "Flight" is set in 1933.

Cotillard plays a dashing and thoroughly modern femme aviator who lands in the Sahara, looking for her lover, an English long-distance record-breaking aviator who's crashed in the desert.

Meanwhile, the local French Foreign legion fort faces a local rebellion.

"Flight" will be directed by Gallic helmer Karim Dridi, best-known for the 1994 "Pigalle." Gaumont is in advanced negotiations for Guillaume Canet ("Hunting and Gathering") to play opposite Cotillard, Trocme said.

The $24 million "Flight" is a further instance of Gaumont's entry into ambitious English-language production.

I have never seen this. Would you say this is a safe blind buy based on my collection?

Don't waste your time with this movie. Don't make the mistake of blind-buying this blu-ray as I did. A truly awful film. Most of your films are filled with a lot of import foreign films that are very entertaining, not boring nor pretentious.

As I was watching this film, I was really wishing I could enjoy this film. There's only so much before the thought of "yes, the cinematography is gorgeous but this story is not very interesting and this movie is just endlessly dragging" took over. It's as if the filmmakers got the talented cast, great costumes, great cameraman, but oops, they left the screenplay back in the hotel in Paris. So they said, "to hell with it! Let's just wing it since we are here in the desert!"

Just find all the reviews of this film online and see if you are connecting with any of the negative ones. I read Pro-B's positive review, I read a bunch of mixed reviews, and then I read a lot of negative reviews. I took a gamble even though I connected with many of the negative reviews, and voila, I got screwed and convinced myself to buy it (and eventually trade it away quickly).

I'll make it easier for you - I love Cottilard, I like Canet, and I love exotic desert movies, but it's not even a film worth renting. I had to force myself to finish watching this.

Contrary to Toddly's remarks, I believe that the film is worth every penny. If you have seen and enjoyed Bertolucci's The Sheltering Sky, then you will like Le dernier vol.
