Criterion Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1989)

Quote:
Pedro Almodóvar’s colorful and controversial tribute to the pleasures and perils of Stockholm syndrome, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! is a rambunctious dark comedy starring Antonio Banderas as an unbalanced but alluring former mental patient and Victoria Abril as the B-movie and porn star he takes prisoner in the hopes of convincing her to marry him. A highly unconventional romance that came on the spike heels of Almodóvar’s international sensation Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, this is a splashy, sexy central work in the career of one of the world’s most beloved and provocative auteurs, radiantly shot by the director’s great cinematographer José Luis Alcaine.
Quote:
DIRECTOR-APPROVED EDITION:

New 2K digital restoration, supervised by director Pedro Almodóvar and executive producer Agustín Almodóvar, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray
New documentary on the making of the film including interviews with Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar; actors Antonio Banderas, Victoria Abril, Loles Léon, Rossy de Palma, and Penélope Cruz; production manager Esther García; editor José Salcedo; and cinematographer José Luis Alcaine
New interview with Almodóvar collaborator and Sony Pictures Classics copresident Michael Barker
Conversation from 2003 between Almodóvar and Banderas
Footage from the film’s 1990 premieres in Madrid and New York
New English subtitle translation
PLUS: A booklet featuring a 1990 piece about the film by Almodóvar, a conversation between filmmaker Wes Anderson and critic Kent Jones, and an interview with Almodóvar from 1989

Haven't seen it, but it sounds good. I'd love it if they released Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown one day, it's so funny.

I would've preferred Live Flesh, but this is a good choice for an Almodovar Criterion release.

I enjoy Live Flesh but Tie Me Up is a much stronger movie. I watch all the Almadovar that I can and Live Flesh goes sort of back almost to Hollywood movie territory ... which is fine... but not special the way many of his other films are.

Anyways,... I guess there's ZERO chance Redbox will have this. They have Donkey Kong and the Raiders of the Lost Banana though... I am curious about that one.

Beautiful artwork inside the case and discs! Crazy movie but really enjoyed it. If the price doesn't drop by release week may have to wait til the next half-off sale though.

I just finished watching this and it was just as good as when I first watched it in the theater all those years ago. Aldomovar really liked bright colors and they really stood out. As far as Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakown, it was talked about a lot in the xtras so my guess that it will probably get a Criterion release.

Well they did release WOTVONB on Laserdisc. I hope this means many more Almodovar Criterions, but my dream is for these 2:

1.) Talk To Her
2.) All About My Mother

Talk To Her would make me giddy.

The dual-format edition went out of print at some point, and only the DVD is listed on the Criterion site.

That's strange, and a little concerning. Usually you'd see a Blu-ray listing still there but shown as "Currently Unavailable" if they were planning a BD-only release. I wonder if they have plans to do that now. Or perhaps they're planning a new 4K release and/or an Almodóvar box set.

Happened to notice that Criterion has a single-disc Blu-Ray available for purchase now.
