Default External HD not working with PS3...

I just bought the Toshiba Canvio Basics Portable Hard Drive on Amazon. It's 320GB and when I loaded a bunch of videos on it, and then plugged it into the PS3, nothing happens.

When I had a Western Digital My Passport, it automatically found it and worked fine.

Are these Toshibas formatted differently then the WD My Passports? Do I have to format it a specific way? What is the easiest way to do that? The windows formatting tool, or swiss army knife or whatever?

Thanks for any help!

Ah I'll have to check it and see what it's formatted as. I usually just plug them in and they work...this is my first time with Toshiba

Also, you're in Lynchburg huh? My man lives in Lynchburg...we both used to live in Charlottesville, but I moved out west, and he headed over to there.

Also, the folder structure has to be very precise in order for the files to show up. On the Ext HDD you have to create a "PS3" folder. Then, within that folder create subfolders for each category like "VIDEO." And, all of those folders need to be all in capital letters.

Actually you don't. I've put files just out in the open in no folders whatsoever, and it shows them.

On the XMB it shows the USB drive, you press TRIANGLE > DISPLAY ALL and it shows the files or folders. Press on the file, and it plays. press on the folder and it shows whatever videos are in the folders.

For videos you have to be under the Video tab, music under music, photos under photos.

Yes, but using the folders as previously described helps filter out files that are not of the specified type.

IE.. If your under VIDEO in the PS3 XMB and "Display all" you will see all sorts of other crap you don't want to see. If you put the stuff in a "VIDEO" folder and press X instead of "Display ALL" you just see video content even if other content is in that folder.

I hated using "Display ALL". Being a neat freak I much prefer using the folder structure.

Well I put stuff on the external HD in folders. So if I have Show 1 - Season 1, and Show 2 Season 2, they are each in their respective folders.

So there is no problem with files being disorganized or anything like that. I'll usually have a "various" folder that has random video files that don't really have a set place, but other than that, there's no problems and there's no need to do that whole PS3>VIDEO format structure thing. I've never done that and have ZERO problems with my file showing up or getting lumped in with other files.

Likewise I'll have music files in their own folders and photos in it's own folders, so as I said... no issues there. If other people wanna go to those lengths to whatever end, be my guest.

It took me 30 seconds to name 3 folders.

In the main directory (no need for PS3>) just put

MUSIC

VIDEO

PICTURES

Thats it. You just put whatever in each.

Press X on the USB drive in XMB and thats that.

You can put whatever folders you wish inside those folders just like before. Doing that just once saves a few button presses later on.

I'm not arguing with that it works for people both ways. But its not a long winded function to set up 3 directories.

I also prefer "View All" even if it's incompatible with the PS3 it's still see-able, so videos, audio, pictures and whatnot are there and not just exact formats (PS3/VIDEO).

During the beginning I used to do PS3/VIDEO which I hated, but after finding out I could just press triangle for View All, never again I used that structure.

Now I don't even use USB sticks for videos or audio on PS3, just stream it to the system with PS3 Media Server.

Now I have another problem with the HD. I've got it working with the PS3 after formatting it for Fat32.

Now it won't work with my Philips Divx DVD Player. I have the Philips DVP3560/F7 with the USB input on the front. The regular Sandisk 8GB thumbdrive/flashdrives work fine in both the PS3 and the Divx player, but this will only work in the PS3.

Usually you plug in the thumbdrive and the Divx player will prompt you to hit the USB button on the remote, but it doesn't do it, and when you press the USB button it doesn't switch over. It's not recognizing the external HD for some reason.

Anyone had this issue before?
