Default Official Boxing Thread

Ok guys I thought I would make an official boxing thread where we could talk about anything related to boxing. This is a good place to talk about boxing news and updates etc...We can still have the other threads for certain fights and polls but this thread will be for overall boxing info and things of that nature. Got Em!!

Here is new info on Floyd. Now lets see if we can get the mega fight to happen. Got Em!!

http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news;_yl...ayweather-jail

LAS VEGAS (AP)—Undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. has avoided jail time until June 1 in a Las Vegas domestic violence case involving an attack in September 2010 on his ex-girlfriend while two of their children watched.

The 34-year-old fighter had been scheduled to turn himself in Friday to begin serving a 90-day sentence imposed last month.

A judge said she weighed Mayweather’s contractual obligations to the fight set for May in Las Vegas against an as-yet unnamed opponent.

Mayweather’s lawyer pleaded with the judge to allow Mayweather to fulfill commitments regarding the fight, emphasizing the economic benefit to Las Vegas when Mayweather fights.

Mayweather pleaded guilty Dec. 21 to a reduced battery domestic violence charge and no contest to two harassment charges.

The plea deal saw prosecutors drop felony and misdemeanor charges that could have gotten Mayweather 34 years in prison.

Is it just me or Amir Khan is starting to annoy the hell out of me? He's a good boxer but he talks too much by taking shots at Floyd for the past year, and then how he's complaining about his loss against Peterson last month.

Latest rumors are saying that Floyd and Manny will fight in November in a bigger spot. Also they are saying Floyd will fight Cotto May 5th and Manny will fight Bradley June 9th.

I actually aint to mad about this. As long as the two fight before 2012 is over with then thats ok. I also think both of their respective fights are interesting as well. I think Bradley is capable of upsetting Manny but he has to knock him out because we all know Manny wont lose a decision especially with a big fight with Floyd coming for November.

As for Cotto, I dont think he can beat Floyd but I do think he is back to his old self and could make the fight interesting for a while before Floyd either knocks him out or win on points. Got Em!!

Yeah I rather see Mayweather fight Cotto because it's a different bout. If it becomes official, I'd most likely order that fight.

Manny said he won't fight over 147lbs against Cotto. I rather see undefeated Timothy Bradley take the stage in May/June against Pacquiao.

The whole Mayweather-Pacquiao seems to be rushed so it's November 2012 or never.

I recall hearing Mayweather was up on domestic abuse charges and got 3 mos. Has he served this time and has this affected any Title bouts? What little I know about him is that he's been called (by some) the best pound for pound fighter ever. I've never seen him fight as I haven't followed boxing since the Hearns, Hagler, Leonard, Duran era.

He was due in jail on the 6th of January. His advisers reconsidered the judge stating that he reserved a fight on May 5 at the MGM Grand. His adviser also stated that Mayweather helps the economy in Vegas bring in "X" amount of money (millions) when he fights so the judge let him off the hook and has still has to serve his 87 day in the County jail staring June 1, 2012.

He's one one of if not the best in this generation hands down and you can arguably say the same for Manny Pacquiao. IMO, I love Floyd and I enjoy what he does but his fights after Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, and Hatton weren't as challenging. Since then he fights every other year. He will always be criticized why he kept ducking Pacquiao, and you can say the same why Pacquiao neglected to take drug testing demanded by Mayweather who started this crap since Pacquiao rose to the top in 2008.

Sounds as though Mayweather caught a break. How is his earning strength in Vegas correlated with a lesser sentence for beating up women? I don't get it.

Are you saying Mayweather and Pacquio have yet to fight, even though Pacquio has been the #1 contender for more than 3 years?

He did catch a break by pleading guilty so his sentence would reduce to 87 days by 3 days he already served.

No they have yet to fight. The drama has been unfolding since maybe after the Pacquiao/De La Hoya bout of the end of 2008 and then it caught on in the entire sports world/media in 2009.

Pacquiao has continued to move up in weight and has won 8 weight division titles which set a record. Mayweather has 5 division titles. When Manny went up to Welterweight beating Ricky Hatton, and then defeating Miguel Cotto in 2009 for the WBO Belt. That's when everyone started comparing him up against Mayweather. There's a lot of things involved. :d

WOW...time for these guys to square off...end of story. Could be a bloodbath, reminiscent of the Aaron Pryor/Alexis Arguello fights in the early 80's. These 2 Greats beat the sh*t out of each other back in the day. They fought as jr. welters. Loved the welterweight & middleweight divisions.

Yea he is arguably the greatest fighter of all time. No one has come close to beating him and he is for sure the greatest defensive boxer of all time and also the fastest boxer of all time. I also loved the Hearns/Leonard era. Leonard is one of my fav fighters of all time along with Mayweather and Holyfield. Got Em!!

People may have thought at first Floyd was ducking but after all this stuff that has taken place since November of last year the roles have been reversed. Floyd has made it clear he wants the fight. Yes there are things that need to be agreed upon but if Manny doesnt think Floyd wants the fight he could easily call his bluff and agree to everything right? Got Em!!

They really have had the buzz to fight since 2010 actually. After Floyd fought Mosley. It has been a big soap opera to say the least also. I do think they get it doen by November. If not oh well. Got Em!!

Pacquio MUST get his shot. He's been the # 1 contender for 3 years without a crack at the Champ. Granted Mayweather has had some self inflicted issues, but he was cut a huge break so he can continue his career. If he doesn't give Pacquio a Title bout, then he's a chump. No offense intended to you CZAR, but come November will be 4 years without a Title shot for Pacquio...Ridiculous.

LOL, they are both champs in the Welterweight Division. Mayweather just got the WBC belt from Victor Ortiz this past September. Mayweather is a 5-time Champion. I think you have up to 18 months before giving up your title when you don't defend it. Pacquiao won 8 different belts before stopping himself at the Welterweight ranks. Regardless, both fighters don't need a championship belt to show the world what they have accomplished.

This bout between these two is for the best Pound 4 Pound fighter in the world, and who's the best fighter this generation. The reason why it's taking this long is because Mayweather doesn't want a loss in his undefeated record.

Gotcha Cruz thanks for the clarification.

Here I was, still thinking "Hitman Hearns" held the record with 8 different Championships in 6 different divisions. I have to see Pacquio fight...without question.

I just realized how AWESOME that signed "Golden Glove" you have, now is.

Well MaCruz already broke it down for u, but yea they are both champs so its not about a "shot" its about the best two fighters (I still think Martinez has sumthin to say about that) possibly goin at it. Also again May has welcomed the fight with Pac but its been ongoing with different issues on both sides. The latest issue is supposedly the purse which shouldnt be an issue. Mayweather is the most popular boxer and has never lost and should get a higher purse. Also May offered Pac 40 mill which is way more than Manny has made on any fight and he should take that and run. Hopefully November works out for them pending they both win their next fight this summer. Got Em!!

They HAVE to fight, CZAR. This sport is in enough trouble with the emergence of the MMA & whatever else these guys are doing. The pugilistic beauty of boxing is fading fast. These guys owe it to the sport to square off.
