Default My first step into Home Theater

I am upgrading from my Sony soundbar (no laughter please). After going through these forums and doing some research, here is what I came up with. I was looking to stay around $2500.00. Please feel free to critique and suggest changes as that is why I am posting. Thanks in advance.

Receiver - Marantz SR 5005
Mains - Polk RTi A5's
Center - Polk CSi A6
Surrounds - Polk FXi A6's
Sub - ED A2 - 300

all of this sounds (pun intended) fine. your gonna get pulled in ten thousand different directions here. the gear you have listed is fine and is 1000% better than the sound bar you have so just get it and enjoy it. if not you may never get anything waiting to hear what might be the perfect setup (and there is no such thing!)

quick before the other nine thousand, nine hundred ninty nine other folks get here and start pulling you in those other directions!

seriously, it's fine. go get it and enjoy it!

I only half way agree with the other posts. $2500 is a really nice budget.

I shouldn't say with that amount, because it shouldn't matter the amount, but have you heard any of what you plan to buy?

Or compared them to anything else?

If you have compared and/or heard and like it, then I'm 1000% with ya on gettin it and being happy.

You live in a area where you can go out and do some serious demoing.

When I came to bluray.com, I had a couple cheap HTiB, I read a lot and ‘Klipsch’ was the thing. I went to Bestbuy and listen to them and was thinking, they sound good, but I never really compared them to anything.

In away I compared them to ‘If I like or didn’t like’.

Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed them while I had them. Then something happened that made me go out and do some comparing, heard ‘Monitor Audio’ and been in love ever since.

I’m not suggesting you go buy Monitor audio, I’m just saying go compare.

You might make the mistake of finding a brand that your front three cost $2500, then you gotta get some more money together to buy the rest... lol

I have to say that Im with Hamp on this one. With a budget like yours, you are best to audition as much as you can to find what you like best. Im sure in Cincy there has to be several places to audition speakers. Once you find what you like best, then buy what you can, and if you have to save a little to add something later, do that.

I have been thru 4 HT systems since I originally got an RCA HTiB system.

The Polk RTi Line is good, and it may be the best thing you hear, but you won't know until you audition, audition, audition. If you want some help, Ill help you find dealers near you of various brands.

Thanks again for all the replys. I will definitely audition some first. However, if I am going to invest in this equipment, what about surge protection? Any suggestions. I see some people have amps for additional power. Would that be a good addition or just overkill in my proposed set up?

For amps the best rating out there ( Price/Quality ) is the Emotiva regarding the power surge i think this one from Monoprice is a good one , also the Belkin PF60 at amazon is a good price and no its not overkill its perfect

I like your Receiver choice- I just got this (off Amazon) and for the money I think it's great.

Sub: Consider the Emotiva 12" sub that is on sale right now. It's a really good price.

I could niggle about the speakers but I think those will be great for you. If you are looking for alternatives, I really like the Paradigm CC-190 for a center, the 3-way design is awesome. So CC-190, Titan Monitors, ADP-190 for a complete package.

I would respectfully disagree with this statement. In this budget range I think Emotiva seperates would cost too much money. That would be $1400/$2500 just for electronics, leaving you with $1100 for subwoofer and speakers.

Another piece of advice: I wouldn't spend a huge amount on HDMI cables or speaker wire. I love banana plugs on DIY 14 or 12-guage copper wire- nothing fancy. I hate trying to put bare wire into 5-way binding posts, at least on the receiver end.

Marantz SR5005: $490 shipped on Amazon from 1Call
Emotiva 12" sub: $430 shipped from Emotiva
Wire/cables: ~$80
That leaves you with about $1500 for speakers!

Well considering the OP was going to get a receiver, and Emotiva does not make a receiver, I was guessing he would need both the processor and a 5-channel amp since just the processor would not power his speakers.

OP said: for $2500 he was going to get a Receiver, subwoofer, and 5 speakers. I think an amp without a preamp/processor would be of no use. Perhaps the OP has more equipment than what is listed in his signature. I agree Emotiva is good stuff for the price, but probably not for everyone.

Emotiva dosen`t make receivers but they have a nice pre/pro like THIS ????

I guess that the OP knows what he is talking about when it comes to amps

That is a processor not a receiver. It contains no amplifier.

UMC-1 7.1 Channel Preamplifier/Processor

A receiver combines a processor and an integrated amplifier, making it the only device needed between a blu-ray player and your speakers.

But he asked this " I see some people have amps for additional power. Would that be a good addition or just overkill in my proposed set up? " so he is considering which IMO is not a overkill in any system

i wasn't responding to his need or lack of need for a power amp, I was simply replying to Alma's post, Emotiva is not the only low cost high quality power amps that you can buy.
