Because Ohio sucks, my family and I have talked about moving. I currently work for a Police Department in NW Ohio and although it is a good job, we have realized there is nothing to do and its basically a dying state. I used to live in Savannah, GA and have a buddy who lives in Beaufort, SC.
For if any people live in this area, do they generally like it??? Any pluses or major concerns. Thanks. Last edited by Johnny Vinyl; 06-26-2011 at 06:23 PM. |

Savannah and Charleston are both nice cities by the sea; they're both old-timey towns not unlike New Orleans. Pretty humid. Charleston is a fair bit larger than Savannah. Savannah has a large African American contingency and sorta has a "ghetto" reputation. Traffic isn't bad at all in either city. Because it's kinda on the small side, there isn't a whole lot to do around Savannah, and the drive from Savannah to Atlanta up I-16 and then I-75 is boring and monotonous. Savannah is about four hours from Atlanta; Charleston is about 5.5. In general, I would say that Georgia gas prices are a bit below average, but SC has very cheap gas prices. Charleston is a pretty big party/tourist/drunk city; it definitely has some nice neighborhoods and also a few notable colleges. Savannah has a big Arts School and attracts a lot of film/music/artist types in addition to some golfers (Augusta isn't far to the north). Theres a big film festival there I suppose once a year. The beaches in GA arent great (SC is better), but Tybee Island is a nice little getaway from Savannah. Charleston has a lot of bridges, and you probably don't want to live on James Island if you move there because I've been told the bridges to/from the island are one-ways and that the traffic does back up on these bridges at certain times of day when everyone is trying to get to/from the island. The folks in both cities are generally very nice/hospitable, though.
Edit: oh yeah, I forgot to mention that Charleston is also a pretty big Navy town because of the naval base there. Last edited by wilky61; 06-26-2011 at 11:51 PM. |

Yeah, Georgia does have the HOPE Scholarship for those who maintain a 3 point zero GPA in high school and in college, but as one who teaches in Georgia I also have to add that Georgia has one of the two or three worst public education systems in the entire US... The curriculum development and everything is just f***ed up. Corruption is massive.

My wife and I are looking to move in about 5 years or so (when we should no longer be underwater on our mortgage) and SC/NC is one of the places my wife was looking at. I'd prefer Canada. ![]() |
